Right. I was just pointing out that it has occurred many times. But sure. It takes a lot of “real time”.

I guess. People find all kinds of ways of dealing with the cognitive dissonance of thinking one thing and feeling another.

Well by definition supernatural things scoff at natural laws. If they obeyed them, they wouldn’t be supernatural.

Well I think some men do both. They just don’t connect the two.

I think you are missing my point. Like most 80 year olds he has cognitive decline, possibly more than average. But has never spoken to inform, just to manipulate. So he has no need to self correct as most of us oldies do. You can’t judge his decline by the bullshit density.

Wrong

Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Sure there’s cognitive decline. But people underestimate his manipulative skills at their peril. The confabulation is part of the toolkit. He knows it doesn’t matter if it’s wring

Or you are an aging con man who knows that facts don’t matter - hat matters is the effect. He’s not telling people things. He’s making them feel.

It’s a kind of ouija board. Seems like real woo woo but it’s just a hive mind that belongs to no one but doesn’t belong to anyone who isn’t there either.

I sell houseboats: THESE are the rules Zack Polanski should have met
As Green Party leader Zack Polanski is accused of avoiding council tax, these are the rules on tax and registering to vote if you live on a marina.

Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
He is supposed to know a lot. But council tax when you live in a boat is genuinely unclear.
000
Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Well if you are a continuous cruiser that is true. Council tax is based on property value for that location. Boats don’t have property bands. They move.
000
Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I’m not “desperate” to defend Polanski. I’m pissed with him. I’m just not prepared to condemn him for stuff that is like at worst to have been a mistake. And the issue of boats and council tax (and “legal address”) is genuinely complex and contradictory - and stupid.
100
Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Well if he had a mooring, council tax may or may not have been covered by the mooring fees. I see he won his appeal. I live on a boat myself for part of each week, at a marina - but the law is still unclear on whether I owe council tax in addition.
000
Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
If Polanski had a CC (continuous cruiser) licence and didn’t move very fourteen days in the same direction for several months then he was in violation of his licence. But CRT check.
100
Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
And what is it calculated on? They don’t have a property band. They aren’t using services like rubbish collection and sewerage - that’s CRT and they pay CRT.

Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Sorry it’s really not that simple! You don’t have an address! It’s a real problem. People have to figure out workarounds. Like how to get a GP.

Well it exists but it’s not what people think it is and its legal definition is an oxymoron.

Reminder that "biological sex" is not a thing that exists. It is a legal fiction in every place that refers to it. In the UK, in the equality act, it means "the sex that was written on your original birth certificate." Incidentally, it doesn't matter if that's due to a clerical error.

Why? And no it isn’t rare. Many people who live on boats in the London area are “Continuous Cruisers”. They are continuously moving through different boroughs. They don’t have a home mooring. Their “landlord” is CRT.

There is a real problem for people who live on boats as Polanski did at the time and the law is not clear (it’s contradictory). People who live on boats should not be disenfranchised.

And sentencing generally.

Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Yes it was, slightly, but not much. It was a tiny step towards removing the retribution element. Shame it went no further. I’d like to see retribution removed from all sentencing.

Lots of people are capable of rationalising or just not recognising contradictions between their beliefs and behaviour, especially if the behaviour is normalised in their peer group as the way the game works.

Not saying anything especially novel here but I just keep thinking about how if one’s position is that AI can do STEM just fine on its own, then one’s position is that people are not needed. And then what? What’s the point? What’s the point of doing the STEM with anything? Capitalism is an uroburos

A lot of excitement on here about the article in Science summarising the discoveries of @alistairsponsel.bsky.social and Brian Sutton, just published in the Journal of the History of Biology. Some people have asked, so here is what I think they show, and what are the implications:

I dunno his pushback was pretty pathetic. The small boats are not an invasion, and having to speak German would have been the least of our problems. It’s all a bit “…but how did you enjoy the play?” times several million.

But primary colours are essentially a physiological and perceptual phenomenon. It’s the brain that combines what reaches the retina into colours with “primary” properties.

Elizabeth Liddle @pingu1.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
All colours are pigments of our imagination. Our brains don't "determine colour". They produce a percept we call colour from combinations of wavelengths, intensities, contrasts and context. Blue + Green light looks as yellow as Yellow light - and not necessarily very yellow.
