Personally I dislike fandom. I don't mind artists borrowing or stealing characters, settings, etc., from commercial entertainment. But I don't like accepting a subordinate cultural position to commercial entertainment, which is definitional of "fan."

There's both. A fandom and a community, embracing different people and spaces and activities and artifacts, with a lot of overlap. But the existence of a fandom is undeniable—furry culture abounds in fan art, fan fiction, fan shipping, etc., of commercial entertainment with animal characters.

"Conniption" is an interesting word. At first glance you'd think it was an obsolete medical term preserved as an old-fashioned colloquialism. So you would expect a simple etymology from Latin. But it's of unknown origin; it was never used scientifically. It's like fake Latin fancy speak.
