Cowboys past and present are: Black, Indigenous, Latino, immigrant, queer, trans, radical, female (and the ones in rodeos rely on rodeo clowns to keep them safe). And that pro-democracy pro-Constitution patriots despise this dimwitted pile of hatreds. I've met cowboys and you, sir, are no cowboy.

Agree - but I think you are missing that it is not broadly known. Also I am confused why the failure of the “pure” compound to replicate ideal isotopic distribution would not be noticed first.

I loved the Jakarta Method so much I subscribed to the author’s Substack - where he was generously giving out free books and I got this one. A thoughtful analysis of how the large protests of the 2010s did not lead to lasting change.

The cultural connections between Nova Scotia and actual Scotland mean that this reads like it took place in the Maritimes.

AI will not destroy humanity - failure to acknowledge that AI models need proper testing will. Going from research to product too quickly in many industries would lead to disaster and the fact it is the norm in AI is their failing, not something magical about the technology.

I am judging a high school debate about colonizing space and everyone can imagine a world where humans/humanoid robots are living on orbiting planets or asteroids and no one can imagine that the resources are not owned by billionaires.

I loved this author’s book on the life of ordinary citizens in GDR - and she uses the same formula here for a group of citizens in Weimar as the Nazi’s come to power. Thoughtfully done.

Another quick weekend read. This one was a collection of connected short stories loosely themed around the struggles of aging. Not her best - but I always find her worth reading.

I read Strout’s novels (which I love) so fast I will only buy on Kindle. A new character - and between the New England setting, the main character being my age, the the 2023/4 time frame of the novel - this one did hit me harder than others.

Half way through this book I was ready to be a digital Luddite. Anyone who has a romantic view of Musk’s intelligence should read how is inability to get the basic message in SciFi books. The chapter discussing how changes in science alter government was particularly thought provoking.

She challenged sexist assumptions, helping women develop a sense of self-worth and gain a measure of equality at work, at home and in society at large.

We’re not in the habit of recognizing celebrity deaths here at 925. That said, Dolly Parton is a national treasure and some folks here joke that Dolly is our Locals patron saint. After all her song “9 to 5” is our anthem. Today we remember all the love and kindness Dolly brought the world.
Tribute-style portrait of a Dolly Parton performing in a ruffled light purple blouse, arm raised and singing into a microphone, overlaid with the lyric: "You're just a step on the bossman's ladder / But you've got dreams he'll never take away."
