A very fast and very devastating read.

I do not regret reading - and appreciate the equal depth given to all parts of his life, but there was too much Mao pop psychology.

My daughter had a debate tournament and we got a weekend in New Haven. Yale has a remarkable campus and many great museums.

Thought provoking and building on many ideas that have been fomenting in my mind. Bookmarked with a John Constable cloud study from the wonderful Yale Center for British Art.

Seemed like a timely thing to read. Powerful.

I loved the Jakarta Method so much I subscribed to the author’s Substack - where he was generously giving out free books and I got this one. A thoughtful analysis of how the large protests of the 2010s did not lead to lasting change.

The cultural connections between Nova Scotia and actual Scotland mean that this reads like it took place in the Maritimes.

Trade war isn’t stopping Rush from amazing a sold out crowd at TD Garden.

I loved this author’s book on the life of ordinary citizens in GDR - and she uses the same formula here for a group of citizens in Weimar as the Nazi’s come to power. Thoughtfully done.

Another quick weekend read. This one was a collection of connected short stories loosely themed around the struggles of aging. Not her best - but I always find her worth reading.

I read Strout’s novels (which I love) so fast I will only buy on Kindle. A new character - and between the New England setting, the main character being my age, the the 2023/4 time frame of the novel - this one did hit me harder than others.

Half way through this book I was ready to be a digital Luddite. Anyone who has a romantic view of Musk’s intelligence should read how is inability to get the basic message in SciFi books. The chapter discussing how changes in science alter government was particularly thought provoking.

My dog asking for a treat. Tonight as my daughter and I were ending his walk - the unleashed puppy from across the street ran across the street to greet him and the puppy was killed by a car. If you have a dog - please keep the dog on a leash.

Quick read, fun and well written. Captures the feeling of the transition of your early 20s well - while simultaneously being a little “how-the-other-half-lives -ish”

My second vote - amongst all the bad 80s sitcoms I watched - this one stood out as very bad. Yes it also had a young Juliette Lewis in the cast.

This one was really good and frankly even if you have never heard of Bob Rae it is worthy reading for the discussions on how to govern (or not) during periods of intense deindustrialization.

Resurrecting a life story from Albanian archives is not an easy task - who better than Lea Ypi to do it. My love of the history of bit players in WW2 continues. I had no idea Albania the only place in Europe that the German’s occupied and had a higher Jewish population after the war than before.

What a lovely book for old women like me! I inhaled it. It also reminded me that in undergrad we would all sit by the mail boxes to see who got a letter that day! And they were long and substantial!

When almost everyone dies in the end it feels awkward to say you enjoyed it - perhaps saying it was inspiring to read of those who continued to fight it the worst of circumstances.

I did not mean to read back to back stories about mothers and daughters, but somehow I did, and there were - in relationships and perhaps rigid was of society some parallels - otherwise India is very far from Newport. Worthy of the accolades it received.

A gift from my daughter after a trip to Newport. What started as a story of disposable levels of wealth, moved to a story of societal changes and feminism. Fast, engrossing read.

So happy to see that in Philly they still partake in that great tradition of free matches in restaurants.

I wanted to end my ignorance of the story Haiti and its revolutionaries so I started with the classic. I wish historians never stopped writing in this style.

@nytimes.com As a Canadian I knew that at one point Canada had one national sport - and it was lacrosse. That changed and ice hockey was added in 1994. What is up here??? #Canada

Since I enjoy reading about players more than watching the game - my husband bought me this book - which I thoroughly enjoyed. Separately the author has a great instagram account.

A great choice to read on the train. Focusing the story around food led to a very original book.

I did something a bit crazy and brought my kid to a debate camp near Philly by train and then returned the same day. The latest Acela’s are great. Anyway as we rolled into Boston on the last possible train at 1am - we passed people playing soccer!

Published as “The Book of Negroes” everywhere but the States. Remarkable historical fiction and one of the few books that includes the story of Black Loyalists.

The last of my treats from @portersqbooks.bsky.social for Independent Book Store Day (25% off for my stickers :-)). This book - along with “When we Cease to Understand the World” - are slowly rekindling my love of science - and how different it is from what can be done with AI.

A history of the 2000’s focused on culture - notably internet culture - which I am a bit to old to know other than through my daughters. Intertwined in the stories was his theory of cultural stagnation and I agreed with about 75% of it.
