We've just launched our pre-budget ideas. The basic idea that Ireland's high costs need investment to deal with - not just money to cope. Our core proposal is a big once-off package to support households financially and to move faster off expensive fossil fuels.

There's a new digital billboard planned for Dolphin's Barn. I've objected to it, as I think billboards add nothing to the area - or the city as a whole. Objection here: pidgeon.ie/opposing-a-n...

Insanity. The government have revealed a plan to raise the cost of the bus, Luas and train. The climate is on fire, congestion is increasing, cost of living is up. This is the exact opposite to what should be done. Contact your TDs now and help stop this madness.

A lovely canvass this evening! Thanks so much to everyone who opened their doors to us this evening - we had a little over 60 conversations across Inchicore - followed by some lovely pints.

New hotels in Dublin will now face a much higher development charge than housing. That's thanks to a Green proposal we brought through Dublin City Council. The Irish Hotels Federation aren't happy, but I think we need to really focus in on the development our city prioritises.

BIG news in the fight for Dublin 8 pitches! We've just seen the initial planning documents for a fullsize pitch at Donore Avenue. Our local committee will get a presentation on Wed 17th with full planning lodged the next week. Plenty of road left to travel, but this is great, great news!

The communion money principle: a slightly tortured metaphor I gave to the Mirror the other day. Ireland is being set up for a fall if we keep relying on windfall corporation tax for daily spending. It doesn't have to be like this! Save and invest in infrastructure instead!

Plastic bollards are being removed from Islandbridge - they're being replaced with much more permanent and better-looking kerbs. There will also be new surfaces, cycle-friendly drains, and improvements to make it safer for schoolkids locally. Work started today and should be done by end of June.

Ireland's energy price hikes are a terrible symptom. If we want to stop them, we have to cure the disease.

I spoke to RTÉ's @mcculld.bsky.social this morning about why an inheritance tax cut for the already-wealthy is a bad idea. Is this the only screengrab of my face I could get? Sadly yes. You can listen back on Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/6bOq... Or on RTÉ: www.rte.ie/radio/radio1...

Dublin City Council took up a crucial question this week: how many homes should we build, and where? Building our way out of the housing crisis has to be at the core of our thinking, otherwise the crisis will just roll on.

Dublin builds too many hotels — and nowhere near enough homes. The Greens want to change the city tax system to fix that. Double the tax on new hotels, use the money to cut tax on new homes. 🏘️🏘️🏘️ @feljin.ie

In the depths of a housing crisis, Dublin needs homes, not AirBnBs. Managed to get an application for a full-time AirBnB in the Liberties rejected so that it'll be a home instead. If you know of an illegal AirBnB in your area, drop me a message and we'll get on it.

Found: a foldable e-bike in the linear park in Rialto. Battery was empty so suspect it was stolen and then dumped. Seems in good working order. If you know the owner, drop me a message. Will be going to Kilmainham Garda station if no one claims.

Traffic in Dublin has gotten crazy the past few weeks. But the new government is taking money away from public transport projects that could deal with it. We could have had a new DART station and improved lines at Heuston and Kylemore Road in Ballyfermot. But no. Roads instead.

Car insurance costs are up 9%, yet profits are down. The way we have set up insurance in Ireland is mad, leading to high legal costs and inconsistent payouts. It leaves consumers paying way over the odds. Time for some reforming zeal from government!

Last night in Dublin City Council we started the process of zoning more land for housing. The crazy thing: bad national policy means that there is an artificial max limit on how much land we can zone for housing. If we tried to zone much more, we'd be legally prevented. Mad.

Probably the most important thing the government could do this budget? Start saving. Deeply unsexy policy, I know, but I've seen first hand what happens when a government just spends everything immediately - without looking to future crises and the threat of climate change.

A big blanket VAT cut? It's a bad idea. Better to give smarter, more targetted supports for cafes and restaurants. We've set out a way to give more to small businesses while spending about a third of what the government are planning. Be smart: do more, spend less!

Councillors had to fight to secure a pitch for Marrowbone Lane in Dublin 8. We used our zoning powers to do it: I'm really glad that things are moving forward now, but want to be clear: we won't be rezoning the site until we're happy that a suitable pitch is being delivered.

The road between Islandbridge and Chapelizod can be huge hassle to cross. New plans should be announced soon, but the local Green councillors are hoping to see pedestrian crossings, better resurfaced bike lanes, an end to ugly bollards, and safer junction design.

The Hot Box Sauna in Inchicore is great. It's making much better use of an old surface car park, providing employment and a new facility for locals. They're applying for retention planning permission, so I sent in a quick supportive observation. Hopefully it sails through!
A chara,
I am writing in support of the application for retention of the Hot Box Sauna in Inchicore (WEB2752/25). The business has proven very popular locally and made good use of an underused car park area to provide a relaxing, healthy place for people to visit.
Given the scarcity of space in the area, the use of a car park for this facility is a real improvement and something that should be supported.
Such a use is supported by various policies and objectives of the development plan, including:
•	CCUV22: A policy which aims to redevelop and intensify “underutilised sites within … urban villages including surface car parks”, which matches this application perfectly.
•	CEE1, 2 and 4: Supporting small independent businesses and local enterprises, such as this one.
•	CEE11: Promoting key urban villages as mixed use service centres, including recreational uses.
The area in question is zoned Z10, which supports mixed use. In practice, the facility primarily caters to the public directly (rather than servicing other businesses), which is particularly appropriate given the surrounding residential area.
The facility is also accessible by the nearby Luas line, and is on a cycling and walking route along the canal.
I ask that planners approve this application.
Is mise,

Cllr. Michael Pidgeon
