Also for those who were curious, this is the ribbon art robot I mentioned! it makes cute little ribbon bow toppers to place on gifts, and you can watch it make them through the little window in the front!

I wonder what magazine this image comes from... The left text is describing Tome's character, the bottom text is about the Castanets, and the right text seems to be referring to an unrelated Namco robot that creates ribbon art. I wish I could find the full page,but I have no idea what the source is😵

It's technically *possible* for them to have incorporated touchscreen technology as it did exist in the early 80s, albeit sparsely, but the art book's section on the Castanets is very brief and doesn't explain how they work unfortunately😞

I doubt the touchscreens on the Castanets existed as you said, but they are explicitly designed to contain interactive games for kids, the book touches on it several times. An image of two kids playing on one also appears in at least one newspaper, though I'm not certain where the paper comes from.

Of course I can't verify the outside sources, but most basic historical/character info was correct as it was taken from Toyama's art book. I recognize some of his failings as translation related, some in the book, (like Strobo's name), so there should definitely have been more fact checking from him

Honestly, the spoken pronunciations of Tome's name being so plainly English made my heart sink a little though 😭

I do recognize some things like the misspelling of Strobo's name as a common translation hiccup, so it's odd that he didn't check stuff like that Most of his info on the band is accurate, there's a few things incorrect, but generally it was good coverage Still I'm happy to see them getting attention

Turquoise is valid too! I think technically by the images I've seen he ended up as turquoise/cyan? That said, those colors are very close on the color wheel to green, while still quantifiably being shades of blue, so in he kinda skirts the line of blue/green in general

I like to believe he was green up until a certain point, when the physical animatronic was being built and marketing kicked in. Even so, something tells me Toyama didn't go quietly with the decision to change the color... With a slight hueshift he's almost the exact green from promotional material 🤔

True, ultimately it adds synergy. I cite the logo colors because Toyama's artbook notes the characters each having a respective color in the logo. Also items like the stickers show Tome in an in-between state of both green and blue, so i imagine his color change must have been a pretty late decision

I've always wondered why Tome's physical model didn't end up green... It's clear across marketing material, the logo colors, and his grasshopper identity; he's definitely supposed to be green! So I wonder why he's blue? Maybe a budget thing? A last-minute change of plans? Very mysterious... #PiCPAC

Thinking about the PiCPAC love triangle... Tome is always trying to flirt with Maria, but he always fumbles; meanwhile Strobo sweats bullets because he's too shy to confess his own crush on her first. I like to believe Maria is so focused on reaching stardom herself she misses both of their signals

I really like these concept art sketches I've bumped into in the artbook as I've gone, they really reflect how much turmoil went into the design aspect. Apparently they initially wanted PiCPAC to be stylistically similar to Earth Wind and Fire (third image), what a timeline that would've been😭

Went on a little bit of a side tangent today while translating. The artbook mentions a few of Namco's other robots, so I ended up doing some research on them to make sure I have all my facts straight, it was nice trip learning some about them!
