Fixing the E5540 up is definitely not happening, sadly. While in theory I could pseudo-desktop it or make it a server, in order to be usable as a laptop it would need a new screen, a new keyboard, new touchpad buttons, a new battery, and a new lid switch. And either way it needs an SSD. 💀

I found a 2013 Dell Latitude E5540 and wanted to fix it up. Taking it apart was hell. A mobo locked behind multiple layers, dozens of screws, and brittle plastic clips. In comparison, my 2018 Latitude 7490 is a few captive screws, no clips, and then everything is just…there. Props to Dell.

For community hosting, it has been proven that the community is more than willing to do the work. Just look at Wiimmfi and Pretendo. Today, with secure netcode, server side games, DRM, strict ToS, and DMCA threats (especially the infamous Section 1201), reverse engineering is difficult and risky.

Any games with offline single player mode are already compliant. And games have done this in the past: - GTA IV disabled multiplayer mode in an update, but you can still play singleplayer. - Most Source Engine games have community server support decades after release. - And more.
