So this is why iClicker didn't work in my class this morning. I thought it was just me. I was having problems at 12:30 PM eastern time so it took them a while to find the problem. 🙄 🎢

iClicker Cloud Desktop Outage

Resolved - At approximately 2:10 PM ET, our team identified a connection issue with the iClicker Cloud Desktop application that prevented customers from creating new meetings or interacting with the toolbar after starting class. The team restarted the impacted service, and the connection stabilized by 2:30 PM ET. We will continue to monitor the service, but all systems appear to be operational at this time.

This part on promotion systems for faculty in academia is especially salient. #AcademicSky

Promotion systems that treat mentorship as service and public scholarship as extracurricular. Evaluation structures that count citations and grant dollars but have no metric for the graduate students you helped retain. Department norms that ask junior scholars, and disproportionately scholars from historically marginalized groups, to carry the relational labor that holds communities together while counting none of it toward their advancement.

Note that FY21 had an abnormally large number of continuing grants awarded (50 compared to an average of 5 in other years), so these grants were removed from the FY21 data.

Same from Canada. But they did add "(Gulf of America)" to the Gulf of Mexico label, so I wonder how long before we get one of those for Lake Ontario.

Just got home from the PNE (our version of the state fair) which featured baby ducks, a jalapeño corn dog, the Super Dogs, BBQ brisket and pulled pork, a Neil Diamond impersonator and a Ukrainian pop singer in a sparkly white gown accompanied by a military band.

This is also very problematic and will have a long-lasting impact on diversity in US science. 👩🏻‍🔬🧪

total amount of the pool as $1,016,862,632. It's unclear who ordered the withholding of these funds. Another chunk of money in this pool - about $110 million - comes from the NSF's education directorate.

That amount had been allotted for this fiscal year to three diversity programmes that the US Department of Justice last week ruled unconstitutional because they discriminate by race or sex. The programmes aimed to diversify the scientific workforce by improving science education for under-represented minorities and providing them with financial support.
