Only two gigs left for 2026, in November 13th and 14th in London (Cart and Horses) and Liverpool (Arc:Hive) respectively, while we work on getting our upcoming album ready to release early in 2027 and kick off the year with a good spread of gigs across the UK and beyond. 2/2

Cool review from our Adfeilion gig in Swansea at the weekend, representing our third night in a row with Belfast's Domhain, this time paired with @ofnus.bsky.social to give a nicely coherent set of heavy but atmospheric music, each with it's own flavour. 1/2

I think this will be open access when the full issue comes out (and the supplementary link also seems to be missing as yet and will hopefully become active at the same time), so I will reshare when this appears but in the meantime the article is accessible here: www.academia.edu/171954242/Or... 2/2

Beyond the major government-imposed problems, they have also picked up on the added issues of VC obsession with restructuring etc.: "There is a need...to challenge effectively the assumptions of senior leadership...including on finances, projections of student numbers, and plans for restructuring."

Bit of a long document, but this House of Commons Education Committee report does a pretty good job of identifying why Higher Education in the UK is in dire financial straits, and why this is a bad thing for the UK as a whole (not just academia): committees.parliament.uk/publications...

While I generally like what Am Nat publishes, I am generally put off submitting there as it is pay to publish AND pay to access (plus open access charges if Gold OA is desired). I realise it is a society journal and there are some waivers for members, but still seems excessive for my personal tastes

Awesome to see our bird masturbation research feature on Mock the Week, now I just have to wait on a reptile, venom or evolution question to come up on Curious Cases so @daraobriain.bsky.social can get me on as a guest to disturb him, with science, once again!

Article for @theconversation.com on our new paper (with Chloe Heys, Matilda Brindle, and Tom Price) on the evolution of masturbation in birds, with a focus on the implications of this for the welfare of captive birds doi.org/10.64628/AB....

Birds masturbate, and that’s perfectly normal
Some bird keepers have tried to drug their animals to stop them engaging in solo sex.

Masturbation is also a 'Darwinian puzzle', a trait that at first glance seems to present a fitness disadvantage, e.g. wasting time, energy, other resources, and opportunities. We find links with mating system that suggest ways that masturbation may have evolved. www.theguardian.com/science/2026...

Masturbation among birds is ‘natural’ and should not be punished, say experts
Study finds activity is not harmful or caused by stress of captivity – and is in fact more common in wild birds

Our results also have implications for the welfare of captive birds. Masturbation is often considered an abnormal response to captivity, but we show that masturbation is very much a natural behaviour that should not usually be discouraged or 'treated' by vets 2/3 www.swansea.ac.uk/press-office...

With increasing UK herpetological interest in the concept of rewilding (a common term but one I personally dislike as its meanings are so varied that it's unhelpful at best), The British Herpetological Society have just released a position statement on translocations: www.thebhs.org/news/bhs-pos...

The problem with AI is that the misleading word 'intelligence'. What it can't and never will do is critical evaluation (which requires genuine thought, not just knowledge of facts), and that is exactly what we aim to instil in Higher Education. Appropriate AI use is OK, AI abuse is self-defeating

Living in Wales, we are spoilt for lush locations for videography. From the stunningly beautiful coastlines, to the stark mountains of the North, back down to the rolling hills of mid-Wales, we have got vibes. So when Adfeilion approached me with a vague storyline for their new music video I knew we needed to make the most of the local scenery for this one.
