It does not use many long or difficult words, on the contrary, I find the very plain descriptions of complex feelings and thought very accessible. Maybe this is just an outlier and The Brothers Karamazov et al are a lot denser?

Why do people say Doestoevsky is dense. I am reading through Crime and Punishment and this is really not dense at all. It is extremely easy to read, I have not had a hard time understanding anything in it at all

--making the state look more trustable as an entity to dole out that justice, despite the fact the people who run the state are so much worse than anyone it ever convicts. If that makes sense?

( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 16h
Nah it's okay your point is cogent, I have a habit of speaking very "modernist author"-y when I make points like this as to not let myself be misinterpreted. But basically I think you're right, in that it is an innate empathetic desire of us to wish for justice, but what it ends up doing is--

( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 17h
So does this not just embolden the monopoly on violence the state holds by justifying it under that false notion of preventative justice? It is not as if anything so far has worked to stop powerful perpetrators of harm from becoming more powerful and committing more harm, after all
110
( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 17h
Harming someone who has harmed others doesn't make those past events not happen, but it does allow those harmed to feel they will be protected from future harm. But that's a false sense ofprotection, society largely doesn't prevent crime, it just punishes it after the fact.
010
( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 17h
I agree though I used to agree more but have found myself sympathetic to the notion of justice- a society that punishes people for harming others engenders trust in those harmed that they will be protected in future. But surely there are better ways to engender this trust, no?

( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 18h
It's sad but there's simply no underlying base mechanism that rehabilitates people guaranteed. It relies on trust and cooperation. Doesn't mean one can't personally rehabitate themselves, but also doesn't mean you can take it for granted
010
( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 18h
I have mostly avoided opining on this because this discourse has been quite personally triggering, mostly in the way that people talk about it, how much this has been turned into An Event, to the point breadtubers are making little snarky jokes about it. A reminder that this is all just media.

( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 18h
So a lot of this comes down to trusting someone's words to describe their future actions, and whether you trust someone who has some self-interest in projecting that trust to be truthful. That's not for me to decide for you, I just think having an awareness of what we are actually doing is good.
160
( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 18h
I've avoided saying anything concrete on all this mostly because I don't want to jump the gun, my opinions have been on the greater discourse. But I do think we are muddying terms somewhat. Rehabilitation requires rehabilitative care, and as a society we don't offer that, not really
150
( o ᴥ o ) @photonic.dog · 18h
I think a big problem re: "rehabilitative justice" is that some degree of infrastructure has to exist for it to be effectively real. It's not really rehabilitation to just let someone wing it, but neither is a prison term rehabilitative: both of them rely on a self-reliant experience of atonement

You should be asking why Rockstar gets to do this and doesn't run into any issues with payment processors, while the rest of anyone drawing or writing "explicit content" on any platform have so much trouble getting paid

All philosophies are practices of overfitting but Marxist language is especially funny, “this is because of historical materialism” right on brother most things happen because other things happened before them

I am very cynical about social media's ability to perform anything constructive. I don't believe the incentives at hand allow for good faith discourse, ever; its basic conditions make it impossible to speak or approach a topic in good faith.

The regular dehumanisation on display, the way we toss about sensitive subjects for engagement, this "main character of the day" shit, I find it reprehensible. Nobody cares about anything they're talking about beyond how it associates with their image.

I don't think it's healthy or good that social media means that people have become media objects both in our self-conceptualisation and in the way we consider other people.

all the pulse and solitude of a self-burning sun
a traditional pen and ink drawing of a coyote curled in on itselt and partially covering its face with its paws, eye looking intently at the viewer. a burst of color in white, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and blue (painted in gouache) erupts from its neck.
