i’ve been reading the magic mountain, whose test of the reader’s patience with its monotonous repetitions reminded me of walking the long highways of flower, sun, and rain, whose newly english-patched ps2 version i’ve been playing. there is odd joy and meditative melancholy in dreamlike emptiness

And yet, the *rate of profit* is lower than ever! Because p'=s/(v+c) , surplus value divided by the sum of variable capital (labour costs) and constant capital (all other investment). As capitalists keep needing to reinvest profits and keep capital circulating & growing, c grows faster than v!
