I disagree with the central argument but, as usual, it´s very well argued and worth thinking about

The discourse then became this thing of pro-Israel versus anti-Israel, Zionist anti-Zionist antizionist do we capitalize this or hyphenate that and on and on and frankly I think what a lot of Jews experienced but didn’t articulate was a profound disappointment in what Israel was meant to mean in terms of Jews’ place in the world, then demonstrably was not. Whether your specific politics and interpretation of events pointed you towards anger at Netanyahu and other Israeli leadership for not averting the Hamas attacks or at the severity of the retribution or whether you wish Israel had been more aggressive still, I think this sudden stark awareness that Zionism had failed to do what it was meant to do underlies so much here.

Absolute best sort of reply 'oh you're not answering me that's because you don't HAVE a reply' as though this were the only possible reason for not posting on command.

That is alas because the two twitters now each include roastings of the most extreme-case examples of the other.

Let's work backwards here. Do you think any synagogue/congregation is protest-worthy if they host anyone who's had any role ever in the Israeli government? Any synagogue that is by any definition pro-Israel or Zionist?

Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It is not "strange" at all that Jewish religious services might have prominent Israelis speaking at them. Should they have gone with someone from that other Jewish state, for this purpose? If you choose to interpret that as an endorsement of specific Israeli politicians then shrug-emoji I suppose.

What I was going to say re: the Australia thing, and still have I guess in whichever extras doc on my laptop, is that he was in trouble for harsh and violent rhetoric... from October 10th (?) 2023. The timing seemed kind of relevant there.

It is naive to imagine holding a free-Palestine protest in front of Yom Kippur services wouldn't have the optics it does!

Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
You and I clearly see some things differently and I am 100% sure we're not about to convince each other via posts here. But I refer you to my reply just now about what exactly was being protested, and where.

Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think if there had been protesters specifically with signs about Regev, and that was it, and not a generic pro-Palestine rally in front of Yom Kippur services prompted by Regev's presence, it would have been a different situation, received differently by all (except Regev himself maybe).

So yes I went from having never heard of him (I am not on the Mideast beat) to knowing all about his Australian legal issues and current job and past jobs and controversial remarks and and and, and none of it is in the article.

He is though! I had a longer version where I went into some say this others say that re: Regev specifically before deciding that the relevant question is simply, is it surprising that he'd have been brought in, and my thinking was, it is not.

I find the sitcom-gentleness question fascinating. It's a sensibility thing more than anything, it's *not* the same as a show having left-wing politics or a diverse cast or anything like that.

If the answer is that you’re welcome in publishing as a Jewish author *if* your politics are not merely not Zionist-self-identified (by some measures most US/half of Canadian Jews) but antizionist (3 people all of whom work at JC, basically), then…?
110
Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Or: treating it as a data error that ‘how’s it going for Jews with typical politics in publishing’ doesn’t address how it’s going for Jewish authors of books about antizionism who identify that way themselves. If they’re thriving, who exactly is this proving right?
100
Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The JC piece’s answer is effectively, they’re not facing challenges or if they are it’s because book publishing now rightly (in their view) rejects Zionism.

Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The more I think about it, the more I think it’s the ‘this isn’t happening but it is and that’s good’ thing. The question is how it’s going for Jewish and Israeli authors *of books not denouncing (or necessarily addressing!) Zionism.
150
Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Anyway, there's an element of 'this thing you say is happening isn't happening, but also it is and it's good that it is.' But yeah someone did need to look into this topic. Someone(s) else still will.

Jews can't say 'we feel discriminated against' and expect eggshell-walking and microaggressions attentiveness. Jews can't even say 'a synagogue was just shot at' and demand these things! So the template for speaking out when hated for who you are simply fails.
130
Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
It's worth reading. It's a mix of things. I agree with them that the book-counting thus far has not been rigorous. I disagree that 'well now books by Palestinian authors are flourishing' constitutes a counterpoint.
010
Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
...makes sense when you consider what the template had been. But it doesn't work because there's hardly a consensus that Jews are the oppressed as versus the oppressor. Indeed, consider the way the narrative played out with the Jewish (?) woman pretending to be Palestinian thecjn.ca/opinion/pers...

Two Jews, three apologies: Avi Lewis and Hannah Gann atone, for Palestine
While Hannah Gann’s lies and apologies are more colourful than Avi Lewis’s, only one of these people is causing harm from an actual platform.

Some Jews post-October 7th have effectively embraced this way of speaking about their experiences. And there *is* data (flawed as all data will be) about Jews as victims of hate crimes versus other groups, for example. But it isn't always about data. Sometimes it is indeed about vibes. Which...

There would *often* be a form of bigotry or violence declared an epidemic, without data backing up that whichever problem, however tragic when it did happen, was happening often. There was a culture of not questioning feelings/lived experience/claims of the marginalized.

Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
What I'm struck by mainly isn't these numbers (which can be found to be basically anything, depending what's included) but rather that there was a long-2010s template for speaking about feelings of discrimination that was not subjected to rigorous fact-checking except by rightwing/heterodox.
120
Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Very interesting and I'll have more to say later but: some of this is fact-checking, some is also people with fundamentally different politics talking past one another.

It's the thing I just RT'd. Basically: agreed that whether antisemitism harms or doesn't harm Palestinians is to some extent unknowable and definitely immaterial. But there's something interesting in instances when it's cheered on AND seems obviously bad for Palestinians.

“antisemitism is actually bad for Palestine” debatable and actually who cares, the only people who should ever say that are Palestinians among themselves if they think it useful (Just like the reverse, I am an unapologetic fan of symmetric morality)

How others see us: Canada's antisemitism problem harms Jews here and embarrasses Canada abroad
A country’s capacity to provide for minority protections, and more broadly its cultivating the kind of tolerance that makes such protections unnecessary, is simply a mark of liberal civilization.

If you’ve picked up on how “antizionism” functions you could well view it as a form of bigotry *while also* objecting to however much of Israel’s behavior. I feel like this is a not-uncommon stance?

Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Like, is this someone who thinks it blood libel to speak of deaths in Gaza (it’s not), or someone who defines a form of anti-Jewish bigotry that calls itself “antizionism” effectively as a form of antisemitism?

Phoebe Maltz Bovy @phoebebovy.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
And I’m sure there’s someone somewhere who thinks everything done by Israel is faultless. Is that the ‘all antizionism is antisemitism’ person?
