On this day in 1683, 13 mostly Dutch Quaker and Mennonite families from near the Dutch-German border arrive in Philadelphia and later found Germantown nearby. It was named Germantown under the leadership of German Francis Daniel Pastorius and their arrival is now celebrated as German-American Day.

Happy Belated Birthday to Larry Fine, best known as one of the Three Stooges. Many sources list his birthday as October 5th but he was born on October 4, 1902 to a Russian Jewish family at 3rd and South Street in Philadelphia. Larry died on January 24, 1975.

#OnThisDay in 1777: General Sir William Howe's forces marched into Philadelphia, occupying the revolutionary capital after defeating Washington's army at the Battle of Brandywine. Despite capturing the city, the victory failed to crush the rebellion and Washington's army regrouped at Valley Forge.

On Labor Day 1943, the heavily packed Congressional Limited train derailed while traveling in Philadelphia through the Frankford Curve. A sudden axle failure sent cars flying off the rails, resulting in 79 fatalities and dozens of severe injuries. 1/2

On this day in 1774, 56 delegates representing 12 colonies walked into Carpenters’ Hall to take a stand against British tyranny. The First Continental Congress brought together revolutionary minds to coordinate resistance against the Intolerable Acts, ultimately enacting a trade embargo.
