On this day in 1911, suffragettes hold an open-air rally at Independence Square. From five rickety platforms, 15 women and 3 men advocated for women's suffrage. Among the speakers were Alice Paul, Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, and Inez Milholland. Read more here: home.nps.gov/article...

#OnThisDay in 1777: General Sir William Howe's forces marched into Philadelphia, occupying the revolutionary capital after defeating Washington's army at the Battle of Brandywine. Despite capturing the city, the victory failed to crush the rebellion and Washington's army regrouped at Valley Forge.

On this day in 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by 39 delegates at the Philadelphia Convention, which aimed to create a new framework of government. This document was later ratified by the necessary states to become effective in 1789. 1/3

On Labor Day 1943, the heavily packed Congressional Limited train derailed while traveling in Philadelphia through the Frankford Curve. A sudden axle failure sent cars flying off the rails, resulting in 79 fatalities and dozens of severe injuries. 1/2

On this day in 1774, 56 delegates representing 12 colonies walked into Carpenters’ Hall to take a stand against British tyranny. The First Continental Congress brought together revolutionary minds to coordinate resistance against the Intolerable Acts, ultimately enacting a trade embargo.

On this day in 1936 Wilt Chamberlain was born in Philadelphia. Standing at an impressive 7 feet and 1 inch he played professional basketball including with the Sixers for 14 seasons. He also coached for a short period. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

In 1793, mid August was the start of the The Yellow Fever Epidemic when Dr. Benjamin Rush noted the first distinct cases. By late August and into autumn, the epidemic forced the federal government—including President George Washington and Thomas Jefferson—to evacuate the national capital city. 1/3

On this day in 1926 Armando "Buddy" Greco was born in Philadelphia. He was an American jazz and pop singer, and pianist. During his career he recorded over 60 albums with his most successful single being The Lady is a Tramp. He passed away in at age 90 in 2017.
