Regular Season Recap The Phillies wrapped up their season on Tuesday, finishing 36-20 with a +46 run differential. Their record was tied for 7th in the 45 team league, and they won the East division by 2 games over the NYY Yankees and Tigers 2, both of whom also advanced to the postseason. They were 4th in the league in runs scored with 428 and hit .288/.403/.426 as a team.

At the time I write this, the 2026 DSL Phillies are 33-18 and are 3 games up on postseason spot with 5 games to go. Over the last month and a half they have been one of the best teams in the league and very fun to watch. Given that the 2022 Phillies White team went 40-19 and won the championship before going 42-13 the following year, it is a tough road to say that the current consolidated DSL Phillies team is the best one they have put on the field, but it is worth an argument when you discuss the circumstances of each team.

Season Recap Record: 22-37 The FCL Phillies were expected to be a poor team, and they were. The offense put up about 5 runs a game, but that was dwarfed by the 7 runs a game the pitching gave up. The young players struggled all year to hit, and injuries and promotions robbed them of players that may have helped throughout the season.

Deadline Recap and Other Notes I wrote about the major trades of the deadline on Monday when they happened, but now we have two smaller trades and some settled dust to get through. First was the RHP Nolan Hoffman for RHP Manuel Colon. Colon is a small 19 year old right handed reliever with a mid to high 90s fastball.

The trade deadline is stressful and it is a time of loss and new hope. Which of course is why after it I was left wondering how far back trade chains go after the Phillies traded Seth Johnson to the Athletics. Of course last night Sam McWilliams pitched against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and kicked this diversion into high gear.

This Week's Schedule Lehigh Valley (51-47) @ Worcester (56-47) Reading (50-52) @ Richmond (60-40) Jersey Shore (40-60) vs Frederick (59-39) Clearwater (60-40) vs Tampa (59-42) DSL Phillies (28-17) Hitter Spotlight OF Jonathan Hogart 5 G 9-19 1 2B 3 HR 14 RBI 5 BB 6 K .474/.560/1.000 Much like former teammate Nathan Humphreys, Hogart was brought in as an undrafted free agent by the Phillies in 2025.

In the winter of 2018-2019 the Phillies traded for top prospect J.P. Crawford along with the ill advised recently signed Carlos Santana to the Mariners for Jean Segura, Juan Nicasio, and James Pazos. Ultimately, Segura would be completely solid for the Phillies and Crawford would be mostly that for the Mariners. The surrounding parts of the deal had involved a draft pick to sign Santana, having Rhys Hoskins play the outfield, and mismanaging the Crawford/Scott Kingery situation so much that the Phillies got nothing from two top prospects.

The trade deadline gives another good snapshot of the season to add in the new draft picks, take a larger view of the DSL season, see some prospects deal with the dog days of the season, and then really make some assessments of how players might be viewed outside the system. The Phillies are a flawed baseball team, but as one in a playoff spot right now they are going to make moves to buy and try and improve the team.

My recap of Day 1 of the Phillies draft was on the harsh side, and no real amount of things they could do on Day 2 was really going to change that. It was clear they had allocated a large amount of their draft resources towards signing Tyler Spangler away from Stanford, and that they would probably be having a low excitement conventional draft from that point forward.

MLB Scheduled day 2 of the draft to cover rounds 5 to 20. It did so opposite the Futures Game and MLB games. It also removes the clean break between picks with slots and those without, so a reminder any pick in round 11 to 20 costs the bonus amount minus $150,000. I would expect the Phillies to take one large likely unsignable pick just in case something breaks down with Tyler Spangler so they have a place to put that money. This post will be updated periodically with analysis as the second day of the draft unfolds.

Some events proceed as a series of compounding foreseeable disasters. The first day of the 2026 draft was one of them. Sandwiched be other programming it began on NBC for 10 picks before beginning an odyssey of digital channels. Meanwhile those in person described it as loud and disjointed, and then suddenly over as the physical space only lasted for nominally the first round of picks.

In the 3rd round of the 2026 draft the Phillies selected Texas RHP Ruger Riojas in the 3rd round of the 2026 draft. While ranked about this range or above by MLB and Baseball America, there isn't really a ton of optimism about Riojas's upside. He will turn 23 tomorrow and is smaller in size. He had success as a starter for Texas, carrying a large workload (81.2 innings) with a solid 3.97 ERA and sterling 21 walks and 120 strikeouts.

With their second round pick (#64 overall) the Phillies selected Missouri State OF Caden Bogenpohl. It is sort of a classic Phillies draft pick in that there are real tools and upside, but in a way that they have never really developed. He is a massive human being, listed at 6'6" 245lbs who is a good athlete. As a freshman, he struck out a high rate but hit 20 home runs breaking Ryan Howard's Missouri State freshman home run record.

It was probably a safe bet that the Phillies would go high risk and high school with their first pick. In SS Tyler Spangler they managed to get both. On the surface he has good size (6'3") with a projectable frame and chance to stick at shortstop. IT seems that he might end up moving to third, but it isn't a forgone conclusion and he probably will be pretty good there.

Stock Changes *Rankings are from June Ranking Stock Up Juan Parra (#18) - In general the industry has a good grasp on fast rising international prospects as the signing period approaches, but it is still good to see a player meet the hype. Unlike Renteria, Parra stands out less for raw tools and more for polish. He takes a professional at bat, will lay down a bunt for a hit when the situation is available, and is solid up the middle on defense.

One of the riskiest demographics of player is young pitcher. Whether it is in the draft or international signing, teenage pitchers have many obstacles in development and health before they can contribute to the major leagues. Teams often opt for college arms in the draft or signing older international pitchers for cheaper after they start to break out. The current Phillies front office has not avoided the high school pitching ranks, whether that is Mick Abel, Andrew Painter, or Matthew Fisher on big bonuses or bets on Mavis Graves and Micah Ottenbreit for slightly less.

Entering this season Brad Pacheco was viewed as a work in progress, a player who had just one healthy season in 3. When he ranked #32 on the preseason list this is what I had to say about him, and I think it gives a good snapshot in time. At his best, Pacheco will show good arm speed and a pair of fastballs that will sit 92 to 95 with some 96s and 97s.

It has not been a great season for the Phillies system, and it starts at the top. Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter both graduated to the majors where they have struggled to varying degrees. Aidan Miller's back injury has put a grey cloud over the system, and poor performances by top prospects like Aroon Escobar and Dante Nori have not helped that.

On Wednesday night Adolis Garcia hurt his shoulder, and without information about what the long term prognosis was, the Phillies made a trade for an outfielder. The DSL season begins on Saturday. Due to a smaller signing class and the pressures of the league for teams to shrink their systems the Phillies have gone with a single team this year. That leaves the roster a bit more concentrated in talent than previous years. Since the Phillies gave most of their bonus pool to Francisco Renteria, the roster is dominated by only a couple of high level players, with more of the depth coming from less known signings.

Stock Changes *Rankings are from preseason rankings Stock Up RHP Gage Wood (#4) - If I were to put out a ranking today, Wood would rank #2 in the system purely on graduations in front of him, but that sort of change in ordinal ranking doesn't communicate how his outlook has changed over the first month of the season. The Phillies haven't had Wood pitch deep into games as they look to manage his overall season workload, but his stuff has stayed consistent inning to inning and start to start.

This Week's Schedule Lehigh Valley (17-16) v Buffalo (15-18) Reading (13-13) v Somerset (12-15) Jersey Shore (14-12) @ Frederick (14-12) Clearwater (16-11) @ Daytona (10-17) FCL Phillies (0-2) Hitter Spotlight SS Bryan Rincon 7-21 1 2B 2 HR 5 RBI 8 BB 3 K 3 SB .333/.500/.667 After a very good week, Bryan Rincon's home/road splits are looking more even, though the Yard Goats are not a particularly good team.

Top Prospects RHP Matthew Fisher - The Phillies selected Fisher in the 7th round of the 2025 draft, but gave him a bonus more in line with a 2nd round pick. He has a good frame for a starting pitcher, and has very good feel for spin, showing very good spin rates on a collection of breaking balls. His control has been shaky, and while he shows good characteristics on his fastball he has been consistently 90-93 all spring.

This Week's Schedule Lehigh Valley (16-11) @ Syracuse (13-13) Reading (10-10) @ Hartford (8-12) Jersey Shore (10-10) v Hudson Valley (12-8) Clearwater (11-10) @ Palm Beach (15-6) Hitter Spotlight C Alirio Ferrebus 8-21 2 2B 2 HR 9 RBI 0 BB 1 K 2 HBP .381/.417/.762 Over the first few weeks of the season, Ferrebus has been one of the best hitters in the FSL, with a season line of .308/.395/.538.

This Week's Schedule Lehigh Valley (7-2) vs Rochester (4-5) Reading (0-3) vs Hartford (2-1) Jersey Shore (1-1) vs Brooklyn (0-2) Clearwater (2-1) vs Tampa (0-3) Hitter Spotlight OF Griffin Burkholder 1 G 5 PA 2-4 1 RBI 1 BB 0 K Burkholder played in only one of the Threshers three games, but that is notable in its own way. The 2024 2nd round pick has struggled to stay health and he has struggled to perform when on the field.

Top Prospects OF Devin Saltiban - Saltiban moved back to center field after returning from injury last year. Things didn't immediately pick up, but they did in the Australian Baseball League this winter. Saltiban shows good power and speed, but so far it has come with a susceptibility to spin and a lot of swing and miss. Hopefully a full healthy season, back at a position he isn't trying to learn, will lead to positive outcomes.

Top Prospects RHP Gage Wood - Wood was the Phillies top draft pick in 2025. There have been a lot of attempts to portray him as a fast mover through the system, the Phillies have generally been more conservative with their timelines for him. His fastball, which will sit 95-98, is going to overwhelm low minors hitters. As will his cutter and curveball, but he needs to improve the feel and command of those pitches in order to succeed at higher levels.

Top Prospects OF Dante Nori - Nori played most of the year with Clearwater in 2025, but the Phillies aggressively pushed him to Reading after he spent some time with Italy in the WBC. Nori has worked on being less of a slap hitter, and to drive the ball in optimal counts, but he might not even have average power. He does put the ball in play, doesn't expand the zone , and has good speed.

Top Prospects SS Aidan Miller - Miller's end to the 2025 season put him among the best prospects in the game. He has been sidelined all spring with back soreness that the Phillies don't really want to talk about. When on the field, he makes great swing decisions, with a good ability to make contact, and plus power. He is a plus runner, who is a fine defender at shortstop, but will likely move around to prep him for a major league role.

Not every interesting player makes the list, and I have notes and thoughts on many more players than will be represented in this additional list. I have grouped this by type of player, starting with the new international signees that I don't rank as part of the major list. This is also not the "honorable mention" or next 40-50 ranked prospects, and is more of sampling of interesting players, former top prospects, future breakouts, those that just missed the list, and players I just find neat.

Another season, and a Spring Training full of small sample sizes. Here are just some thoughts over the first half of Spring Training and WBC. Notes and Thoughts After a great first at bat, it hasn't been a great spring for Justin Crawford at the plate. He is not whiffing at a high rate, but he is hitting the ball into the ground without drawing walks like he was in AAA.

The Spring Breakout is back this year, with the Phillies playing two games (@ MIN 3/19 and v TOR 3/21). New this year is that teams had submit a 40 player pool now, that will then be cut down to 25-27 in two weeks. What is unknown about the Phillies (at least two me) is whether they get to update the pitching roster between the two games because it is unlikely that any starting pitchers use would pitch in both games.

The WBC rosters came out last night for the competition that kicks off in a month. The tournament sort of divides itself into the top teams and then the rest of the field. With an influx of MLB players to teams of distant ancestry, some of the middle of the pack teams are more interesting than past years, even if they don't have the firepower of the very top.

As part of writing the Top 50 I pull a bunch of data and start to dig in to get a deeper look at the players. I can't put all of the data into the writeups, so it is largely the overview that gets put into the list. When it came to Justin Crawford more extra information was generated than usual, and that information told a story more nuanced than much of the discussion around him.
