A graphic split into two halves: on the left, a black-and-white historical engraving of a woman working at a sewing machine with tools; on the right, a light blue background with a black asterisk logo and text reading 'STUDY: When new sewing machines arrived in Victorian England, 153,000 jobs disappeared. But 140,000 new ones were created. "However, 44% of the new jobs emerged in just two counties: Northamptonshire and Leicestershire." Hillary tracked how workers moved into new jobs across the entire technological shift – offering some insights for today's AI age.' A photo of Hillary Vipond, CSH Postdoc, appears at the bottom.

🔥 What a start! The CSH Winter School 2026 is underway and day 1 already left plenty to think about. What happens to the "space of exploration" when AI begins to drive the scientific process? We kicked of yesterday with James Evans. 👉 Register for his public lecture tomorrow: shorturl.at/5g3bD

🆕 RFBerlin Discussion Paper! Our project leaders @essobecker.bsky.social, Christian Dustmann & Hyejin Ku show that skills and technology reinforce each other: early tech adoption increases demand for skilled labor, which in turn boosts further innovation. 🔗 www.rfberlin.com/wp-content/u...

Forthcoming in AER: Insights: "Prime Locations" by Gabriel M. Ahlfeldt, Thilo N. H. Albers, and Kristian Behrens.

Prime Locations
(Forthcoming Article) - We develop a method for delineating prime locations—ultra-dense clusters of economic activity—within cities and apply it to comprehensive establishment data covering all US metropolitan areas. We further use big data to extend the analysis to a global context where administrative data are sparse. Many cities in the US and around the world are dominated by a small number of prime locations that can concentrate up to one-half of tradable services jobs on tiny shares of land and are dominant centers of economic gravity. In cities with fewer prime locations, a larger tradable services share concentrates in them.

It's not often that a theory paper piques my interest these days*, but this by @snageebali.bsky.social and coauthors, on the logic behind zero-sum thinking by voters, is just brilliant -- and so relevant and urgent! www.econometricsociety.org/publications...
