No, UK Government is not scrapping its space programmes. There’s been some confusion and bungled communications over the musical chairs in civil space policy and the UK Space Agency this week. It all matters less than the chronic lack of focus and leadership from UK Government for 15 years. 👇👇👇

The UK Space Agency has been absorbed into the science department. The potential effects are still unclear
The agency has been the subject of some criticism and some aspects of the new arrangement could be positive.

HamTV testers, the transmissions will go off-line for the first part of the upcoming week. See the graphic for timing. No timing for a full video test yet, you know we'll share as soon as we know.
The image is a notice about a planned outage for HamTV, which will go off-line to support other payload operations on the International Space Station this week. The expected outage schedule is:Power Off: Monday, 18-August, 14:15 UTC (10:15 AM ET)
Power On: Wednesday, 20-August, 12:35 UTC (8:35 AM ET)

The image also includes a 2015 NASA photo of Samantha Cristoforetti (IZ0UDF) with the ARISS HamTV Transmitter on the ISS.

Let's start the week with some HamTV updates - we compiled the FAQ in the graphic with our experts. If you'd like to get involved in the HamTV discussion, join the ARISS Discord. Link below.
When will HamTV start transmitting video?
We expect to schedule a end-to-end video test after Crew 11 gets settled aboard the ISS.

When will HamTV start to be used for educational contacts?
That will be dependent on the testing mentioned above.

Can an SDR device be used?
The software used with SDR devices has developed significantly since the first use of HamTV in 2014. We look forward to hams experimenting with this and seeing the results.

Will HamTV output video that can be decoded with the Icom IC-905?
No, the IC-905 does not currently support decoding digital video.

The BATC site talks about receivers not available in my part of the world. Are there alternative parts lists?
As we get more
information on devices,
we’ll work with the BATC
and our other teams
to publish more info.

HamTV Acquisition of Signal (AOS) reports! Thanks to several European hams for confirming the HamTV carrier transmissions earlier today. Several North American passes upcoming, so we'll watch for those reports too.
A screenshot featuring multiple signal analysis graphs and information related to HamTV: AOS. The left side shows spectral displays with frequency peaks at 2.395 GHz, including a waterfall plot and a real-time spectrum analyzer. The right side contains text announcing the first reception reports of the HamTV carrier over Europe, with details about digital amateur television from the ISS, transmission on 2395 MHz, and links for more info, live feed, and discussion. The ARISS logo is at the bottom.

To get past 1,700 STEM contacts with the ISS for students, it takes someone on the inside at NASA. Our person on the inside for 20+ years has been Kenneth, N5VHO (and @RF2Space on X). We wish him nothing but the best in retirement when he departs later this year. 73 to N5VHO!
A celebratory image featuring Kenneth Ransom, an ARISS team member at NASA Houston, who is retiring after over 20 years. Kenneth, with the call sign N5VHO, is pictured with Nichole Stott (formerly KE5GJN) at the 40th Anniversary of Amateur Radio in Human Spaceflight event in 2024. During the event, he hosted a live contact with the International Space Station for students in the audience. The image shows Kenneth in a green polo shirt and Nichole in a blue flight jacket with NASA patches, standing in a room with a purple backdrop and other attendees. Text on the image highlights Kenneth's role as a bridge between ARISS and International Space Station activities at Johnson Space Center, his work in scheduling, and his achievements, including the VUCC award #132. The ARISS logo is also visible. (ARISS/N4BFR Photo)
