Last Sunday, we observed the flaring source Cyg X-3 with VLBI between the amateur radio telescopes in Stockert and Dwingeloo. We had to observe low above the horizon (2˚) making calibration hard, but it's still quite bright - a few Jansky, as was noted in Astronomer's Telegram 18003 on 24 August.
Graph showing a strong correlation on Cygnus X-3 between Dwingeloo - Stockert, 2026-08-30, 120 seconds integration time. On an offset of 0 seconds, the correlation magnitude is 1500 (uncalibrated).

Doppler monitoring Tianwen 2's frequency with @amsat-dl.org's 20m dish in Bochum shows a frequency jump on 11 June, which means that a small manoever happened on that date.
Graph showing time on x axis (7 June to 14 June 2026), frequency on y axis (900 to 1500Hz). The data shows a jump on 11 June. Graph title: "Frequency residual w.r.t. Kamo'oalewa, base freq 8428.200 MHz)."

We think a Tianwen-2 manoever happened early 7 June, as expected. With the Bochum telescope (@amsat-dl.org) and the Dwingeloo telescope, we observe that a) Tianwen-2 is close to the asteroid on the sky and b) the change in the line-of-sight velocity (Doppler) now almost matches that of the asteroid.
Sky plot showing the location where the Dwingeloo telescope measured the Tianwen-2 spacecraft, with a 0.1 degree field of view. On 7 June, the spacecraft is apparently within 0.1 degree of the asteroid.Frequency residual w.r.t. Kamo'oalewa, with an estimated base freq of 8428.201 MHz. On 4-6 June the residual is between 13800 and 14300 Hz, increasing. From 7 June, the line is almost flat, changing only a few Hz in hours. This shows the change in line-of-sight velocity is now close to that of Kamo'oalewa.

Tracking #tianwen2 for a few days, we see that the Chinese spacecraft is clearly getting closer to the asteroid Kamo'oalewa. According to online rumors (see wikipedia's reference to a post from Andrew Jones), it would arrive 7 June 2026. That seems consistent with our observations so far.

A star plot (DSS background) with a blue line showing the coordinates of Kamo'oalewa over time and red dots showing the Dwingeloo radio telescope localizations of the spacecraft. A fit through the localizaions shows that the spacecraft is getting closer to the asteroid.

With the 25m Dwingeloo radio telescope, we just tracked #Tianwen-2 on X-band. It was at an offset of 1.1 degrees from asteroid Kamo'oalewa, which it is going to visit. We recorded IQ data, maybe others can decode this (@destevez.net, @aang23.satdump.org?). Data at data.camras.nl/satellites/r....

It's the anniversary of the Dwingeloo radio telescope: it was opened by Queen Juliana on 17 april 1956. We celebrated this during the lunch break by reenacting the opening ceremony, with Roelie as her majesty and Michel as Professor Oort. We used the original button, which we recently rediscovered.

Using the Dwingeloo telescope (which predates spaceflight!) we are tracking the carrier frequency of #Artemis II. Maneuvers cause slight changes in that frequency. We annotated the timestamps of Day 1's proximity operations demonstration and we are measuring velocity changes of just a few m/s!

After fixing this mistake, the frequency difference is on the order of 1 Hz. This is about 0.7 ppb, so it is within the accuracy that we could expect for the GPSDO at Bochum. So mystery solved!

The signal can be detected both in the Dwingeloo and Stockert 25 m radio telescopes, but the performance of Dwingeloo is poorer. The observed Doppler spread is on the order of ±0.75 Hz, which is a bit less than the spread model I made. Read more: destevez.net/2025/04/anal...
A plot of the power spectral density of the signal as received in Stockert and Dwingeloo. The plot is normalized so that the noise has mean zero and standard deviation one, so the detection values in sigmas can be read directly. There is a continuous trace showing the measurement of the PFB spectrum analyzer with 0.5 Hz bins, and a dashed trace that is a moving average of 5 of these bins.A plot of the power spectral density of the maximum ratio combining of the signals at Stockert and Dwingeloo. The Doppler spread model is also shown for comparison. The model predicts a slightly larger Doppler spread than what observed in practice. As in the previous plot, the spectrum is normalize so that noise has mean zero and standard deviation one, and both the spectrum in 0.5 Hz bins and a moving average of 5 bins are shown.
