Wow! I had never thought about their origin and did not know this. Thanks for the education.

It's from Wessex Press. Colon Samuels did the annotations and they are nicely done. (Speaking as an annotator myself.) There is a problem in that some text is missing from "How the Brigadier Held the King" and "How the King Held the Brigadier" but it's still a good read.

There was a problem with the editing though. Two spots where a short bit of text is missing. But still a good compilation.

I'm currently reading The Annotated Brigadier Gerard which I picked up in New York last January. I had forgotten how great the stories are. Action and adventure that shows how good a story-teller ACD was. The annotations really help a lot.

What did you think of it? I've had it for ages and have not read it yet. It's not a cheap book.

You really need to play "We're the Replacements" while at First Avenue. It would be so appropriate.

Interesting your mention of the Monadnock Sherlockians. I met a member in July and they are mentioned in the Friends of the Sherlock Holmes Collections (U of MN, Andersen Library) newsletter that is about to be mailed out.

Another bit of fantastic research by Matt. Yes, truly a sad story. Surprising that her money was left to ACD. I suppose Nem had intended it to be for Louise but hadn't changed her will. It would have been nice if the money was given to Mary, but I doubt that happened.

I _have_ to put that on my list of things to do on my next trip to London. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'm on vacation in Spain and we toured the Royal Palace in Madrid today. Overall the trip has been non-Sherlockian but at the Palace there are 5 Stradivarius instruments including 3 violins. I suspect this one is in better condition than the one Holmes owned. #sherlock

IMHO Booth was OK, but the best ones are by Lycett and Stashower. Both had access to info not available to prior biographers, especially Lycett. IIRC, Lycett was able to include things released by the family after the big auction.

I need to get there on a future trip. We used to live in North Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales is my slice of heaven. But the Peak District looks amazing as well. Have fun!!

You _have_ to visit Blue John Cavern ( cf ACD's "The Terror of Blue John Gap." But don't get lost or go too deep.)

Shall do. Although, per agreement with my wife, this vacation is totally non-Sherlockian.

We are currently in Madrid exploring the art museums and having great food. First post-retirement major vacation. Seeing the total solar eclipse on Tuesday (weather permitting). Definitely having fun. 😊

That truly was a fantastic exhibition. Thank you. We were lucky to have it come to Minnesota as well. Glen and Cathy Miranker are so generous in sharing their collection. (For those who don't know, the Mirankers own the books and organized the exhibition.)

Jeopardy had another Sherlockian clue the other day. The category was "Frequently Misquoted."
This 4-word phrase of explanation doesn't appear in any of Conan Doyle's writings, but it was in common use by 1909.

Impressive collection! And good heavens! You have both the UK and US editions of "The Secret of Moor Cottage." (For others, H Ripley Crowmarsh was the pen name of ACD's sister Bryan Mary (Dodo).)

Are you familiar with the Library of Scotland's online Ordnance Survey maps? They have high detail maps of London from the 1890s. I find them very useful. Let me know if you want details.

There was another ACD clue on Jeopardy today. Subject was "1926 Bookshelf" for $1600.
In the '20s, Arthur Conan Doyle cranked out nonfiction on a passion of his, including "History of" this movement of seances & mediums.

Elsewhere he wrote “I came of age at 80 degrees north latitude.” On that day the ship was about as far north as they would travel. Quite a life he led. 3/3

Happy 167th anniversary of Arthur Conan Doyle’s birth. In 1880 he was on the whaling ship SS Hope. On his 21st birthday, his diary entry read: “A heavy swell all day. I come of age today. Rather a funny sort of place to do it, only 600 miles or so from the North Pole. … 1/3

Good teachers can have a profound effect on lives. So can bad teachers. Unfortunately it is much easier to be a bad teacher and they are more common. I'm glad that you overcame the fuckhead and became the brilliant person that you are.

It ticks the legit boxes for me. I preordered through The Mysterious Bookshop's website. They are the preeminent mystery bookshop in the US. If they are involved, no question about legitimacy. (Not that I had any doubt.) It's definitely not a vanity publication.

I loved that movie. Dustin Hoffman's constant refrain of "This is nothing!" As a script it was funny. As a real-life situation, it is deeply troubling.

I like noting when Holmes or ACD clues come up on Jeopardy. On April 17, under "Brit Bits" for $800, the clue was "For Queen Mary's Dolls' House at Windsor Castle, he hand-wrote a miniature manuscript entitled 'How Watson Learned the Trick'." The solution was "Who is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle."
