So at 223 K or 258 K, the ice is only partly held together and can slowly spread out. As the boost fades, the molecules also move closer together, which is the spacing change they noticed near 273 K. So the guess that it’s tied to how the sim models attraction is correct! 3/3

To make ice look like ice, the sim makes the molecules pull on each other more strongly and spaces them farther apart at low temperatures. That extra boost fades gradually from ~215 K to ~277 K instead of switching off at exactly 273 K. 2/3

Designer response in parts: Water just below freezing doesn’t act like real ice in the sim, and that’s a deliberate simplification. The sim is 2D with only a few dozen molecules, which isn’t enough for water to form a real-looking ice crystal on its own. 1/3
