This sounds great, of course. AR puts booksellers on notice too:
The book is available from all good bookshops: if your bookshop doesn’t have a copy it is per definitionem not good.

This reminded me that I'd seen a Murakami production at Barbican before, and recalled little of it except maybe that was the one where they turned impossibly bright, retina scorching light on the audience at the end. "Why could I recall so little?" I thought, googling, to be struck with this horror:
A five star review of The Elephant Vanishes at the Barbican, labelled, horrifyingly: THIS ARTICLE IS MORE THAN 23 YEARS OLD

Thanks Eryn, all! This was such a good prompt the story pretty much fell out of the sky and embedded itself in my skull. So pleased @rhppress.bsky.social chose it for their Stone's Throw series. bit.ly/4yESqyM

What kind of lame, half-mad bullshit are you trying to sneak over on us? When Rolling Stone asks for “a thinkpiece”, goddamnit, we want a fucking Thinkpiece… and don’t try to weasel out with any of your limey bullshit about a “50,000 word novella about the condition humaine, etc…”

Do you take us for a gang of brainless lizards? Rich hoodlums? Dilettante thugs?

This has DeLillo-esque elements, especially the opaque poetry of dialogue, teetering on the edge of nonsense (before the illness that corrodes language fully takes hold). Some good jokes too:

Cheers James. Just got some promo art from @edgeandbusby.com for Witnessed: An Anthology of Literary Horror. Out next year, it features stories "where the worst things happen between people". I know that's exactly what some of you sickos (complimentary) are looking for...
Gore drips from ornate keyhole on cover for WITNESSED, out next year

This was excellent. A random punt on something (and someone) id never heard of before. Any Jocelyn Brooke -heads out there? Is his other stuff anything like as weird?

Night Call (2024, dir Michiel Blanchart) is fucking great. Uses the unimprovable formula of films like Cell 211 and Headhunters: 1) establish intelligence of protagonist 2) fuck em up 3) make every single scene until violent denoument a puzzle solvable by ingenuity and desperation.
Poster for night call, suitably action-thrillery

I'd like every small-minded critic that gave middling reviews to Ballard's late novels to form an orderly queue and make their apologies. Look at this zombie horde shit. Weaponised walking stick!

Thanks Steve, everyone! Absolutely thrilled to be in next CHM - the very first venue listed on my Big Spreadsheet of Writing Seriously! 'The Split' is a gothic tale about families and pressure - and an old wooden door that reveals violence through the fine splits in its panelling. Monsters abound!

Thinking more of the 'overconfidence in a strnage environment' genre: 'Salmonella Men on Planet Porno' by Yasutaka Tsutsui is a good example - a warning that giving things we don't understand silly names isn't a defense against their seriousness.

This is great, with a delicious morsel for Ballardheads. #ballardian
A demented and strangely beautiful passage in J.G. Ballard’s novel Crash comes to mind, a few sentences in which spectators at a multi-car wreck watch the “deformed vehicles” more than the human victims. Ballard’s narrator wonders if these witnesses “saw within [the deformed cars] the model for their own future lives.” CarJitsu falls short of Ballard’s portrait of ecstasy and transcendence, to say the least, but it does imply a certain tryhard yearning, like it wants to recreate in another venue the carnage associated with motor vehicles. Do the crash inside the car perhaps, rather than out. Making the seatbelt unsafe again does constitute, after all, the philosophy at work here.

Re Musk. In Deadwood, lovable, true Ellsworth meets evil oligarch Hearst and cannot forgo treating him exactly as he deserves. Amid the ostensible gentility of ‘business’, it comes across as crass, incontinent with rage: but is exactly how we should handle evil pieces of shit, whenever we can.
Scene here: https://youtu.be/et9yS8sv3PI?si=U5rCG-edeEL1zZOUEllsworth: Whatever's toward what he wants. Not a flying fuck if it's true or how fucking soaked in blood.
Alma: That talk serves no purpose.
Ellsworth: What talk to a murderer does?
Hearst: I'd not be insulted in my own rooms, Mr. Ellsworth.
Ellsworth: Where shall we go for me to do it?

1) Thanks for this information, which is an amazing endorsement of the virtues of the least popular social media platform. 2) The use evokes an anti-Madonna figure, ish, and 'dancing with satyrs' may be (characteristically) interpreted in 'depraved and monstrous' sexual terms?

Wild punt into the literary internet from a tiny account on the least popular social media platform: A Rebours has a reference to 'Cydalisa', about which I can find nothing. Theres a ballet called Cydalise et le chèvre-pied but that post-dates the novel by 20 years. Any ideas?

Incredibly @tregovian.bsky.social recognised A Rebours from these images of Salome. Huysman's writing was brilliantly described as '[c]ontinually dragging Mother Image by the hair or the feet down the worm-eaten staircase of terrified Syntax' - but I'm having a great time.

A masterpiece, as is the (first) movie. And one should always send the "cosy catastrophe" allegations packing, as David Ketterer does here:
"The Midwich Cuckoos provides the extreme instance of just how brutal his vision could be. The novel ends with the deliberate blowing to bloody bits of fifty-eight Children (plus Zellaby)…. What gives the impression of cosiness is the evocation of a conventional, comfortable, English world prior to its disruption – its being blown away, shown to be illusory – all told in a very English novel-of-manners style… that Harris uses to convey his message. The effectiveness of his best works has much to do with the extreme ironic disparity of style and content. The oh-so-civilised novel-of-manners style cloaks the anguished, animalistic, Darwinian truth."

Tbh, had to reassess my snobbery when I read this about the Warhammer books (also I just discovered there are Warhammer books)
Let me explain: McNeil’s books for 40K are full of barely disguised references to William Blake, to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and to Goethe’s Faust. In a sense, the books exist as signs to point the reader back out to the wider historical totality of cultural production.

I need a six episode adaptation of this mad bastard of a book ASAP. Think we're finally at the cultural moment where a tv show could be sufficiently explicit to do justice to a novel from 1796.
