We created gyms because modern day work no
longer required physical activity. Without exercise,
our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al
starts doing our knowledge work.

The best advice for grad students is to have them picture an enormous fire. Their work is on fire. The buildings are on fire. The fire has consumed all and its flames reach into space and consume even the cold and silent moon. Also don’t enter your original work into a chatbot.

every single one of these linked processes stems from thinking of education in general, & higher ed in particular, as a resource frontier: a virgin territory or untapped resource of as-yet uncaptured potential wealth that now must be harvested / optimized / extracted. this mindset is our true target

Just last week the AI bros signed a voluntary, self policing safety pledge. Today here's yet another attack that -like others before it - "would likely result in criminal charges being filed had human hackers taken them."

This is why I love tchg in public libraries. Of course surveillance creeps in thru security apparatae + digital vendors’ user tracking, but the proprietors of these spaces are generally committed to autonomy + privacy. They’re places of non-compulsory, intergenerational, non-extractive learning.

To AI proof assignments begin by locking work browsers and activating work history. Then slowly lower each classroom computer into the nearby pool of molten steel. Next locate Cyberdine Systems Corporation. Your job is not complete until you have eliminated every trace of the machine. You’re free.

At the end of Middlemarch, we’re told everyone thought Fred’s farming book was written by Mary, and Mary’s book by Fred ‘In this way it was made clear that Middlemarch had never been deceived, & that there was no need to praise anybody for writing a book, since it was always done by somebody else’

Solomon: cut the baby in half Mathematician: good. Now cut it in half again and continue cutting it in halves until the partitions are small enough to fit smoothly along an irregular curve. The number of cuts will approach infinity as the sum converges to the exact definite integral

Mathematically speaking you can cut the baby in half and then reassemble it in such a way that it produces two identical babies. Perhaps this is what King Solomon was going for, originally.

Will never get over the generational bait and switch of student loans. By the time the loans are declared impractical for the purpose of funding meaningful learning, who will even remember that they were put in place to facilitate mass cuts to public goods?

Daylight Savings is actually totally anodyne. The reason it's so objectionable is because twice a year we get reminded that our social form would rather mess with our sleep than shift work hours so that we could have both the sleep and sunlight after working hours.

A consistently pernicious framing of student experience is that they are not in the “real world” yet, as if the debt they’re accruing and incessant punitive surveillance of their labor and speech isn’t entirely of a piece with the broader cultural moment.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead
