My print copy of our discussion forum on superstition in Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft finally arrived. Robert Blunt had a nice commentary on my article in his Afterword.
A hand holding the front cover of the academic journal Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft (Volume 21, Number 1, Spring 2026). The cover photograph depicts a wedding ceremony taking place inside a sunlit, glass-walled chapel filled with lush green foliage. A bride in a white gown and veil holds hands with a groom in a white suit before an officiant. Text at the bottom reads: "MAGIC, RITUAL, AND WITCHCRAFT / VOLUME 21 NUMBER 1 / SPRING 2026".A photo of the contents page for Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft, Volume 21, Issue 1 (Spring 2026). It outlines a "DISCUSSION FORUM: THE USE AND ABUSE OF 'SUPERSTITION'" featuring contributions by Michael Ostling, K. D. Thompson ("Ushirikina and Misguided Beliefs: Unpacking Superstition and Socio-Religious Bias in Swahili"), Blair Alan Gadsby, Mensah Adinkrah, Tanvi Yadav, Govind Kelkar and Dev Nathan, Ata Mallick, and Leo Igwe. The opening page of an academic article titled "USHIRIKINA AND MISGUIDED BELIEFS: UNPACKING SUPERSTITION AND SOCIO-RELIGIOUS BIAS IN SWAHILI" by K. D. Thompson (University of Wisconsin-Madison). Below the title is an epigraph quote by Malcolm Ruel. The body text begins with a discussion of the word religion, citing anthropologist Fiona Bowie.K. D. Thompson’s contribution in this forum, in a similar vein to the above-mentioned postcolonial theorists, explores how missionaries in colonial Tanganyika attempted to steer the meaning of the Kiswahili term ushirikina away from its Arabic root shirk (conveying Islamic notions of sin) toward a meaning equivalent of English “superstition” in their denigration of African Traditional Religion. Thompson’s contribution provides a textbook example of colonial knowledge production and contestation through the politics of translation. They further demonstrate how colonial-era translation decisions now fuel intra-African discourse in which Christians levy the charge of ushirikina against both Muslims and practitioners of all that gets glossed as “traditional” in contemporary Tanzania. Thompson is not seeking to rehabilitate the concept of superstition in any way but rather tracks the work that it does in a colonial social field and later in a postcolonial context marked by various religious antagonisms. Their piece reminds us of the importance of doing genealogical work, and that the life of a category like superstition does not always unfold in a showdown between the secular rationality of development politics and the religious conventions against which those who attempt such interventions position themselves. Instead, here we see “superstition” as a prejudicial theological category at work between communities in a religiously plural context.

What Does Ushirikina Mean? Religion, Bias, and “Superstition” in Swahili
This article explores the Swahili word ushirikina, which is often translated into English as “superstition.” By examining dictionaries, religious writings, and everyday language, it shows that the term does not have a single meaning. For many Muslims, ushirikina refers to placing trust in powers other than God, while Christians and secular speakers often use it to describe beliefs in witchcraft, magic, or ideas they consider false or irrational. The study traces how missionaries, colonial officials, and religious communities helped shape the meaning of ushirikina over time. It argues that the word is often used not as a neutral description but as a way of judging the beliefs and practices of others. Rather than treating ushirikina or “superstition” as objective categories, the article suggests understanding them as labels applied to beliefs or actions that people regard as misguided, foolish, or religiously unacceptable. This perspective helps reveal how language can reflect broader struggles over religion, authority, and cultural identity in East Africa.

Teaching Love: Gender Roles in Swahili Islamic Marriage Advice
Love is often described as an important part of Islamic marriage, but men and women are not always taught about love in the same way. This study examines 71 Swahili-language Islamic marriage advice booklets written over nearly 90 years in East Africa and compares them with oral marriage advice given to Muslim women in Zanzibar. The research shows that written marriage advice, usually written by men and often given to men before marriage, frequently tells husbands to love their wives. Women, however, are more often taught how to encourage, maintain, and protect their husbands’ love through their behavior, speech, care, and emotional efforts. By analyzing how the Swahili verb “to love” (-penda) is used, the study reveals a consistent pattern: men are more often portrayed as the people who love, while women are portrayed as the people responsible for making love last. Although many texts describe love as mutual and desirable, sustaining love is often assigned to women. These patterns appear across different historical periods, even as ideas about marriage, sexuality, and romance have changed. The findings suggest that gender inequalities are reproduced not only through laws and social institutions but also through everyday teachings about emotions, relationships, and married life. The study shows how religious advice shapes expectations about love, marriage, and gender, and how emotional responsibilities can be distributed unevenly between husbands and wives.
