Intrigued by this 'prehistoric-looking' circular site - Moot Hill, Gristlewood - near Wymondham in Norfolk. Ostensibly a Norman ringwork fortification, further archaeological investigation is projected (alt text not being enabled for some reason, sorry) www.norfarchtrust.org.uk/project/moot...

Got up this morning, went to check the extension lead and saw this. Told someone just now and they'd just been watching the video of the solstitial 'heart of light' at a Mausoleum in Brussels (which I'd never heard of before). Had already perceived this as a kind of birthday greeting from 'afar'...

Against the Grain is an audio essay exploring the friendship between Thomas Bewick and Thomas Spence who met in 18th century Newcastle. It presents both men as innovative artists; one whose legacy was protected, the other whose ideas were obliterated www.ruthewan.com/against-the-...
The main image is a wood engraving by Thomas Bewick which depicts a quiet rural scene featuring a man resting under a tree with a dog nearby, his walking-stick lying alongside him. Titled 'A Gentleman beneath a Tree', this vignette was originally published in 1797 as part of A History of British Birds (Volume I: Land Birds). Above the image are two lines of text in Thorowgood type (a 1950 revival of typography from 1806). The top line says, in block capitals, SPENCE'S PLAN, a reference to Thomas Spence's programme of land redistribution and the abolition of aristocracy. The words, 'Parochial partnership in land' refer to the means by which such redistribution would be managed.

I believe it is painted, with yellow ochre and charcoal pigment. Is it a kind of 'toy macehead' contemporary with the 'Neolithic' finds? An imitation of an Iron Age glass bead of the Meare type, known for opaque yellow decoration? The latter would hugely extend the timescale of lithic activity here

Not sure. I disappeared down a rabbit-hole about Fehlbohrung (failed drillings) on Neolithic battle axes yesterday, musing on the significance of an unfinished drilling (miniature cup-mark?) on a strange stone found on a probable lithic working site, right near a spring (culverted under the road).

Not sure what to make of this stone, found in the garden a few years ago. Two yellow stripes applied to a darker pigmented area, leading to a drill hole, or completely 'natural'? A confirmed flint core and probable hammer stones have been found here too. How would 'paint' not degrade? #FindsFriday
A small pebble with an apparent drill hole and yellow lines leading from it. One end of the pebble is slightly lighter than the other, with a distinct line of darker 'pigment' (if indeed any pigment has been applied). It 'looks' deliberate but don't see how any paint could last in the soil, unless someone was 'having a laugh' with modern paints fifty years ago.A small pebble with an apparent drill hole and yellow lines leading from it. A piece of flint picked up last week. Later, I noticed a subtle red vein through the grey matrix, breaking the surface at one point as a band of crystals. If it's a flint core, I wonder whether the distinctive crystalline redness governed the choice to strike flakes and blades from it millennia ago?

Two flint spheres deposited at a Roman shrine to a water deity, and two flint spheres juxtaposed with a book on André Breton's Arcane 17, his invocation of water nymph, Melusine. A retrospective realisation from an old diary entry. A family visit to Beacon Hill, near Warnford, Hants, on 11 April 1976, after church, may have been a Palm Sunday observance. Probably my Catholic mum's idea, it seems to tune in with widespread traditions of gathering on hilltops on that day

The spirited defense of autonomous art by Theo van Doesburg, Hans Arp, and Kurt Schwitters and their denunciation of “proletarian” as a symptom of everything wrong with politically engaged art attest to the deep divides that haunted the culture and society of the Weimar Republic.[1] Their manifesto presented formal innovation as the conduit to aesthetic autonomy and celebrated

Delighted to find Seven Wells Farm on the OS 150 map (it features on the Saintbury Ley, in the Ley Hunter's Companion), the edge of which is on an alignment which includes Temple Grafton (Shakespeare's 'hungry Grafton'?). Looking forward to seeing Hamnet this week, which has its own haunted 'vibe'

When I first saw this image of Littywood moated manor (Lvtiude in 1086), I thought, "Henge!" David Horovitz, in his survey of Staffordshire place-names (2003) thinks it may have developed from a prehistoric earthwork. Focus for an array of church and manor alignments, its name is 'puzzling'

Thanks for the Devereux tip! On OS sheet 150 (Worcester/Malverns) was pleased Pebworth church, Hillborough Manor & churches at Haselor, Oldberrow & Ullenhall align @ 10 miles. The line south after Pebworth goes off map. Shame the places Shakespeare names are on either side of OS 150/151. Awkward!

Honestly, it was a real revelation seeing that Shakespeare rhyme. Probably got a few Warks leys sketched out on the odd sheet of A4 in a pile somewhere (I'm sure of it, but no time to rummage). Not heard of this rhyme before but an obvious source for a passage in Finnegans Wake by James Joyce - 'as strait a way as your ant's folly me line while ye post is goang from Piping Pubwirth to Haunted Hillborough' (p. 340). I'd only taken it as an oblique reference to Watkins' 'old straight track'.
