At some point we need to have a discussion about the ethics of participation in press releases as scientists. From today’s K2-18b saga, Nikku Madhusudhan in the press release says ‘The signal came through loud and clear’ (1/n)

Great day at DIAS Dunsink Observatory talking future space missions … and checking out sunspots with the historic Grubb Refractor. Not a bad way to spend my birthday.

Spotted this rolled up on a shelf in Birr Castle today: “Observations of the radiation of heat from the Moon Dec 1868 - Apr 1869”. The 4th Earl made a 3 foot telescope and thermopile to measure lunar heat. Pretty amazing. Published in Proc of Royal Society 1869! www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/1...

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) is putting on quite a show over the last few days in the @esa.int SOHO/LASCO coronagraph images, as it passed through the closest point of its orbit at 0.093 au. This comet's orbit is strongly inclined to the plane of the planets. 👇 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2024_...

Our recent work has just been published in A&A! We developed a retrieval framework for the large-scale magnetic fields of objects emitting radio bursts driven by the electron cyclotron maser (ECM) instability. We applied it to the brown dwarf J0623, and found that it has a large magnetic obliquity!
