I once saw a documentary about mountain lions who spend their life mostly solitary, aware of each other only through scent markings left days or weeks prior. Made me very sad until I imagined them feeling like we feel about books. Kinship through space and time.

Seems quite predictable that the Irish government is going to spend a lot of political capital defending Aughinish, but ultimately lose. Clearly the smarter political move to do the right thing before forced, to salvage some credit.

The idea that Ireland should voluntarily take a €€ hit to limit aluminuim exports to Russia seems compelling to me. We should figure that out. But I’m also fascinated by the campaign behind it. Was it Ukrainian govt? Passionate activists? Journalism? I’d love a long-read on the source of the push.

AI is going to speed run capitalism’s greatest tension: A/ Replacing people with technology is great, because it frees their time up for even better things B/ Replacing people with technology is terrible, because it dramatically reduces their economic power

If you view it as just a media company, then sure, $44bn was too much to pay for Twitter. But if you view it as a vehicle to turn memes into retail demand for shares in your other companies, then the ROI looks very compelling 🚀

The big win of the neoliberal era has been the acceptance that most decisions don’t need to be made collectively. The big loss has been the complete lack of new wisdom on *how* we conduct collective decision making. We’ve wasted years debating an all-or-nothing, at the expense of doing it better

If Europe really wants to get on the front foot, we should pursue making the Euro the global reserve currency. The steps are probably: - Trump kills fed independence - Germany agrees to borrow to grow - We implement the digital Euro - Lots of Draghi reforms, esp capital markets - UK rejoins

Watching the development of AI is a reminder of why the permission-less innovation in liberal democracies is so powerful. So many voices so confidently declaring all of the ways in which it can't possibly work. But people are still going to try and we'll all find out what works and what doesn't.

In 2004, it took the world a year to add a gigawatt of solar power — now it takes a day
A line graph depicting the average number of days it took to install a gigawatt of solar energy capacity worldwide from 2001 to 2023. The vertical axis represents the number of days on a logarithmic scale, spanning from 1 to 1000 days. The horizontal axis indicates the years from 2001 to 2023.

In 2004, the average time was about 1 year, which is marked on the graph. A downward trend shows significant decreases in installation time over the years. By 2010, it took under 30 days, and by 2015, just over 7 days. The most notable point is in 2023, where it dropped to about 1 day on average for installation.

The data source is attributed to IRENA (2024), with calculation by Our World in Data, and the chart is identified as CC BY, indicating it is licensed for sharing and adaptation with appropriate credit.

Worth reading.
There is a fundamental difference between partisan policy debates and what we're witnessing now. When Republicans pass legislation on immigration, when they reform tax policy, when they push back against progressive cultural initiatives—this is the normal, healthy function of democratic governance. Elections have consequences, and the party in power has every right to advance its policy agenda through legal channels.

But what's happening now exists in a different category entirely. When private citizens gain unauthorized access to Treasury payment systems, when security officials are removed for following classification protocols, when congressionally established agencies are illegally shuttered—these aren't policy changes. They represent the systematic dismantling of the constitutional framework that makes policy debates possible in the first place.

Consider the profound difference: Opposing Democratic policies on taxation or immigration is legitimate political disagreement. Refusing to execute laws passed by Congress, removing civil servants for following legal requirements, and allowing private citizens to seize control of government functions represents an attack on constitutional governance itself. The former is about what policies we should have; the latter is about whether we'll maintain a system where policy debates matter at all.

To conservatives who value our constitutional inheritance: This isn't about advancing Republican policies or opposing Democratic ones. It's about whether we'll preserve the constitutional system that allows these debates to occur through democratic processes rather than personal decree. When we replace professional civil service with personal loyalty systems, when we ignore congressional mandates, when we allow private interests to seize control of government functions—we're not winning political battles, we're destroying the arena where those battles are meant to occur.

I see people assessing Trump’s wealth from his meme coin by assessing the value of the 80% he still owns, rather than the 20% he sold. The grift isn’t in value of the pile of magic beans you still own, but in the price of the ones you sold.
