Not in English, but in Danish. The word "vegne" (which is a somewhat archaic word that only appears in five commonly-used regular expressions) is etymologically related to the word "vej" ("road/path", or in this context, "side"), and I always have to check myself to not misspell it "vejne".

If you're a Dem who thinks you'll gain something by going anti-trans, look at Gallup's "most important problem" and Fox News' "most important issue" polling and see where trans issues rank. Whoever told you going anti-trans is a savvy or necessary move spends too much time on X and should be fired.
Gallup polling. "LGBTQ rights" moves between 0 and 1%.Fox news polling. Wokeness/transgender issues at 0%.

I’ve now lived so much longer than I would ever have expected to that I feel I’m living in the future. This is when I imagined Neuromancer happening. And now the creators of today’s AI warn us that it threatens humanity.

Learn a second language while at university. When history students ask me what courses they should take (which happens surprisingly often), I tell them language – not history – courses. If you have an opportunity to go to university you should try to learn a 2nd language, regardless of your major.

Just imagine the fun you'll have demolishing it afterwards, though. Assuming it isn't built so shoddily that it self-demolishes before that.

A collapsed Iranian regime and a state of civil war in Iran would definitely be interpreted as a "victory" by the Trump regime, though. At least, they would be able to sell it as one to their cult.

Another effective channel is to tell the racist fucker to piss off and kick him out. You do not have to indulge this bullshit in the name of "academic freedom." There's "controversial" and there's "completely unfounded racism" They are not the same

In the course of other research, I came across a Danish family in the 17th century who had five sons, four of whom had the same name. Son no. 1 was named for the grandfather. That son died in infancy, so they gave the same name to the next son. Repeat until one of them survived.

I'm not a Catholic or even a Christian, but I was fascinated (because I am an historian). I was surprised by the person chosen, who was very low on my list of likely choices, and pleasantly surprised by his choice of regnal name.

If you show up to Bluesky without following anyone, you'll be treated to a series of posts about art, music, and dogs. If you show up to X without following anyone, you'll be bombarded with right-wing conspiracies and white supremacist slop. It's weird which one is seen as a "political bubble"

Fun fact: in Danish, "snik snak" can be a moderately derogatory term for "small talk", or it can be a dismissive expression indicating that someone is talking nonsense.

As Odyssey translations go, my favourite is the late Prof. Otto Sten Due's translation (into Danish) from 2003. Having said that, I am very happy for Professor Wilson that her (excellent) translation has had such success.

I will not negotiate away anybody’s human rights and I will oppose any politician who thinks that is an ok stance. I don’t care what party. If you’re going to support democrats who oppose transgender humanity the entire thing isn’t worth fighting for. The line must be drawn.

Also, people who have studied in the USA tend to be more America-positive than the general population in their homelands (at least, that's my experience). Losing that positivity means losing a lot of US influence. Not that the Trump regime actually understands how soft power works.

It is (IMO) the best noir ever. So many perfect moments, but I think my favourite is the scene where the fleeing kids, having taken shelter in a barn, wake in the pre-dawn hours to the sound of Powell singing in the distance. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PyN...

I've found German theatrical performance posters from the mid-20th century that call it an opera, too — but I've also found Dutch, Swedish, and Italian theatrical performance posters that refer to it as a "musical drama" or a "musical play". So...

Well, the French certainly seemed to think it was an opera, when this performance was put up in Paris in the 1950s.
1950s French theater poster for a performance of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" at the Empire Theatre in Paris, clearly listing it as an opera.

I was thinking of standalone novels, not trilogies or series. But if you see the Riddle Master of Hed as one book, it would definitely bump either Murakami or Mann off the list. Not LeGuin, though.

With English text, for convenience:
English translation of the Portuguese original.
Panel 1: "If dragons existed, would they have two or four legs, in addition to wings?"
Panel 2: "Unless they were aquatic... In which case they would have fins..."
Panel 3: "And then they wouldn't breathe fire either... or would they...?!"
"Could you be quiet??"
Panel 4: "I'm in the middle of something important here!"
"Dragons are important too!"
