Listen, I just think it's weird that the same people who are saying they're worried that AI is going to wipe out humanity are also eager for military contracts that will give AI control of weapons.

NO media 1000s are marching in DC to defend voting rights; 90 orgs signed on, Reuters sent photographers, but local media Bernie Sanders, AOC and Martin Luther King III attended Wa Post buried it A Black-led march is visible in DC only after somebody else reports it Repost the march they buried

Reminding people not to break the law is sedition according to this administration?

I mean "maybe" it's just a cop out. I agree we should decry inaction

peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 10/04/2025
Maybe. I know a lot of people who withheld their vote because Harris wasn't perfect for them in some way or another, and so instead we have the current dumpster fire. A lot of them still think that was the right choice, which I can't wrap my head around. I think "better" is preferable to "worse"

peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 10/04/2025
I also hear a lot of talk about only supporting things that are perfect solutions and I think when we insist on all or nothing, we usually end up getting nothing
100
peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 10/04/2025
Totally agree. Insisting on incremental changes when big improvements are possible is just an excuse to avoid change. And incremental changes arent really happening either, so, again, just an excuse
110
peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 09/04/2025
Yes. *And* if we see an opportunity to make things incrementally better, we shouldn't pass up that opportunity simply because it doesn't get us all the way to where we want to be

I think that there was a significant shift in attitudes for gen x. But I don't think many gen x would agree that it's defeatism or lack of fight. I think we'd say it takes every last bit of fight we can muster just to keep ourselves and our loved ones afloat

Most people my age have come to the conclusion that retirement will come with a casket, whether social security exists or not, and politicians seem intent on making sure it doesn't. So I think it comes down to choosing our battles
100
peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 04/04/2025
... blame the fund for the expense of repayment - who is going to help us change any of that? the rich folks in congress who are authorizing the free loans? - at this point, we're not even really confident the US government will exist by the time we retire
100
peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 04/04/2025
Why accept it? - It was never much more than a pittance and COL increases are far below inflation - we've been told since our first paycheck that the fund will be broke before we retire - any money the fund does have, congress will borrow with an IOU, and then...

I think it may only apply to (and letters sent to) people who start receiving benefits after the out-of-money date.
100
peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 04/04/2025
I dunno, maybe it was the letter social security sent out saying they were going to be upside down soon, but don't worry, they should be able to pay 3/4 of the already-less-than-you'd-need-to-survive benefit, for awhile, anyway. Kinda seemed like a death knell

peteroxley.bsky.social @peteroxley.bsky.social · 02/04/2025
I think it's just that eggs are cheap protein and they go in a lot of different recipes. So for families that cook with a lot of eggs, significant changes to price and availability can be a big deal
