To everyone that's tired of hearing from me, I sincerely apologize. But for those that want an incentive-aligned CDR industry that is correctly assessing atmospheric impacts, I'm going to be speaking at Carbon Unbound East Coast in May. See you there!

Carbon removal is moving beyond early curiosity and into real investment. That was a clear takeaway from #CarbonRemovalDay in Ottawa last week, where we hosted “Setting the Standard,” a breakfast with leaders from industry and government on building national standards for CDR.

Emissions are often not reduced because of market structure, not technical limits. Procurement. Geography. Financing. We’re expanding Absolute Climate’s certification framework to include Environmental Attribute Certificates for low-carbon products.

A slower year for carbon removal doesn’t mean the industry is stuck.

The only solutions are clear definitions and consistent accounting. Otherwise, we are likely to erode the trust needed to bring buyers to the table, and inadvertently introduce a barrier to scale that may never be overcome.

Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 17/12/2025
For buyers, conflating reductions and removals creates confusion about the impact being created, increasing the likelihood that the wrong claim will be made against their emissions. We need to do better.

Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 17/12/2025
When reductions claim to be removals, they're exposed to the same greenwashing risks seen in avoidance and forestry. They also absorb resources from real negative emissions, reducing their ability to scale to the levels needed in the decades to come.

Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 17/12/2025
Most carbon standards today regularly blur the lines between the two. They enable registry-certified projects to claim to be a negative emission while INCREASING the amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere. As a result, both reductions and removals are negatively affected.
100
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 17/12/2025
Reductions are essential, and represent the bulk of the impact needed to reach net zero. Our ability to scale carbon removal actually increases as the world achieves deeper decarbonization. The relationship is symbiotic, rather than contentious.

When emissions reductions and negative emissions are conflated, there are no winners. I wrote an op-ed with @impactalpha.com to explain why 👇

For us, this work is more than an academic exercise. We want to build the foundation for how truly accountable CDR will scale in the decades to come. But thats only possible with input from the community. So please consider sending us your feedback before the December 26th deadline!

I'm especially proud of all the incredible thought and effort from our Standards Lead Grant Faber, who lead this update process. I don't know anyone else who could make such impactful changes and ship them after only 2 months on the job 😵‍💫

We just pushed a big update to our Absolute Climate Standard! We've doubled-down on the clarity and consistency thats needed for quality certifications. This revision brings us closer to our mission of ensuring that CDR project claims always match real atmospheric benefits.

If you know Adam, you know he’s not just one of the most technically capable people in CDR, but he also brings his personal integrity into the work he does. He deeply believes that it’s possible to build scalable MRV without compromising on the climate benefits delivered by CDR. Welcome Adam!

Critically, they also deeply understand the role MRV must play so CDR delivers on climate promises. They’ll be advising the Absolute Climate team on how to support US policymakers, and influencing our strategy to ensure high-accountability MRV embeds into future policy opportunities.

Ensuring that accountable standards underpin the CDR industry requires more than science. Policymaking is critical. For this reason, I feel beyond lucky to share that @erinmburns.bsky.social and Giana Amador are joining as inaugural members of the @absoluteclimate.bsky.social advisory board! 🥳

This is what I'm talking about! CDR has a massive political role to play on ensuring equitable trade between industrial economies. @weremovecarbon.bsky.social continues to show that they have a strong vision for the future of CDR policy in the US. www.carbonremovalalliance.org/policy-work/...

There's been a lot of talk about tariffs lately, but one tariff deserves our attention: a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. It includes carbon removal.

Building a scalable and accountable carbon removal industry requires early demand. Learnings from real deployments are the best way to drive down MRV uncertainty and develop new innovations. That's why I'm excited to join the CDR Demand session at Carbon Unbound East Coast, May 20-21 in NYC.

Vesta has spent more than a decade developing world-class mCDR MRV capabilities, making them the perfect partners for this milestone. We’re looking forward to showing more about what we’ve built together in the near future.
010
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 25/03/2025
At @absoluteclimate.bsky.social, we apply universal assessment criteria to all projects — meaning we hold an mCDR approach to the same standard as BiCRS or DAC. We can remove uncertainty about whether a mCDR project has been scoped properly, or if the monitoring requirements will hold up over time.
100
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 25/03/2025
This is a big one for us! We’re partnering with Vesta to apply the Absolute Carbon Standard to marine CDR for the first time. mCDR is often treated as a 2nd class citizen, because of the challenge of connecting project claims to atmospheric impacts. We want to fix this.
101
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 28/02/2025
Building the standards and certification processes needed for gigaton-scale CDR is complex, and there won’t be a single “right” answer. But having multiple approaches in the market increases the chances that we’ll land on solutions that actually help CDR scale.
000
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 28/02/2025
CDR needs an accounting system that ensures scale-up aligns with climate goals. One-size-fits-all won’t cut it. That’s why Absolute Climate uses emissions flux models—giving buyers a clear, apples-to-apples way to compare projects.

Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 28/02/2025
Really appreciate this opinion piece by Freya, Zeke, and Kata. I totally agree. “What is CDR” is the wrong question. The real question is: Does a project deliver the right climate impact? 👇

This approach allows us to design a North Star for the rigor needed at gigaton-scale, while also meeting projects where they are today. A win-win for the industry.
110
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 10/12/2024
With this additional distinction, the Absolute Carbon Standard is capable of supporting all projects, without needing to reduce rigor to do so. Credit buyers are provided with more transparency around what is being delivered, and how a project ranks against its peers.
110
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 10/12/2024
Currently, there are two classes -

Absolute: Projects that adhere to all the strict criteria in the Absolute Carbon Standard.
Innovation: Projects that don’t meet all of the criteria because they're still developing their technology or have unresolved scientific uncertainty.
110
Peter Minor @peterminor.bsky.social · 10/12/2024
Mitigation Classes are an acknowledgment that mature projects and innovations need and should be held to different requirements. They label project credits based on their ability to meet the full set of requirements in the Absolute Carbon Standard (ACS).
