(3/3) As usual, the Peterloo commemoration centred on the names of those who died in 1819 - some read out by members of their families. Sean Cooney came to sing his setting of those names from his album Peter's Field. And as ever we were glad to welcome the Lord Mayor, who laid the council's wreath.

(2/3) We had special guests at today's Peterloo commemoration - survivors from Tiananmen Square, which is also mentioned in the circle of the Memorial commemorating other state attacks on campaigners for democracy. They brought a scroll bearing the names of 200 protesters killed in Beijing in 1989.

Thanks to all who joined us today at the 207th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre, to honour the 18 who lost their lives in the struggle for democracy in 1819. There were plenty of wreaths - our own, the council's, and the TUC's - plus many flowers laid beside the names of those who died. (1/3)

The People's History Museum in Manchester has acquired a rare jug with a map of the Peterloo Massacre. It's on display from 1 August. If you're coming to the annual commemoration (Sunday 16 August 1pm at the Peterloo Memorial) it's a ten-minute walk to the @phm.org.uk to see the jug! #Peterloo2026
A 19th-century white jug, with a red and green floral pattern around the rim. The body of the jug shows a map of the streets around St Peter's Field, with a numbered key identifying the sites associated with the Peterloo Massacre.
An inscription above the map reads "A PLAN of the GROUND on which the REFORMERS met at MANCHESTER on MONDAY the 16 AUGUST 1819. And which proved so fatal to many."

We're glad to see this piece in CAMRA's magazine, announcing that our home from home, the Briton's Protection pub on Great Bridgewater Street, has been saved, with a ten-year agreement between the management team responsible for its unique and much-loved style and owners Star Heineken.
Headline: Britons Protection Latest.
Photo: the front of the Briton's Protection pub on a sunny day.

Mark West, Allan Hudd and all other staff at the Britons Protection, on Great Bridgewater Street in the City Centre, have reason to celebrate, with the resolution of their dispute with Star Heineken. An agreement has been struck which will see the pub in the safe hands of the business partners for a further period of ten years, with the renewal of their business lease for the same term.

Speaking recently, Allan Hudd said it was a successful outcome that would see the future of the Britons Protection assured under the current management team. Allan is looking forward to the certainty of providing what they do best. Steve Ingham, pub preservation officer for Central Manchester CAMRA, said what this means is that they will be able to offer a range of local, regional and national beers and a vast range of whiskies of *their* choosing, which was the underpinning principle of the campaign.

During the campaign, Allan, with the support of CAMRA, submitted an application to the City Council and the pub is currently the only premises in the city centre which has received the status of Asset of Community Value, and this is due primarily to Allan's efforts.

On the 250th birthday of Henry Hunt, the Radical politician arrested at Peterloo as a private militia plus the British army attacked crowds of campaigners demanding the vote, we must remember that the fight for democracy is unending, but we can't give up. #RememberPeterloo
Henry Hunt standing on the hustings for the Westminster election of 1818, his right arm raised, his left hand holding his famous white hat. He is surrounded by figures all wearing top hats. Behind him is a banner proclaiming "Universal Suffrage: Hunt and Liberty", crowned by a red Liberty cap. A speech bubble reads: "I am a plain Englishman. I approve of the conduct of Sir Murray Maxwell, in coming forward as he has done. Why should you send Sir Samuel Romilly to Parliament? He can find his way into the Den of Corruption. You know the Hero of the Tower, as well as I do, who ran out at the back door when his friends were waiting for him at the front. I have hoisted the cap of Liberty."
Murray Maxwell, an officer in the British Royal Navy who Hunt was supporting in the 1818 general election, lost narrowly to Samuel Romilly.

Henry Hunt was renowned as the greatest radical orator of his age. Following the tragic outcome of a mass meeting in St Peter's Fields, Manchester in 1819, he spent 30 months in Ilchester Gaol. There he wrote his autobiography and agitated for prison reform. This talk, first given to mark the bicentenary of the Peterloo Massacre, explores his turbulent life, political career and strong Somerset links.

Today is the 250th birthday of Henry Hunt, the Radical orator arrested in 1819 at the Manchester rally now known as Peterloo. He was tried for Conspiracy to Excite Terror and Rioting (in reality, it was the soldiers who rioted) and jailed for 30 months, but served as Preston's MP from 1830 to 1832.
A contemporary coloured engraving of Peterloo, August 1819. On a makeshift platform Henry Hunt, wearing a white hat, is remonstrating with a soldier, carrying a drawn sabre, who is trying to arrest him; another man, perhaps a supporter, or maybe a local constable, has both hands on his left arm. They are surrounded by men, mostly in top hats, women in bonnets, and banners bearing slogans such as Vote by Ballot, Major Cartwright's Bill, Unite and Be Free, Universal Suffrage, Annual Parliaments, Female Union of Royston [I think], Order Order. The platform is surrounded by a huge crowd, their mouths open and one man spreading his arms as the soldiers force their way through, waving sabres. Buildings with smoking chimneys are visible in the background.

Peterloo Memorial Campaign @peterloomemorial.bsky.social · 17/09/2023
This is the Bluesky account of the Peterloo Memorial Campaign, which has worked since 2007 to raise public awareness of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 and campaigned for a public memorial in the heart of Manchester. We hold an annual commemoration on or near the anniversary of Peterloo, on 16 August.
