Our very second ever quince harvest.
A green plastic grocery store bin filled with about 60 quince, perhaps a week short of being at peak ripeness.

Really love the years when the literature Nobel is announced and everyone is happy about it. My Folio copy of “If Not, Winter” is one of my most prized possessions. I pick it up and try to just bathe in the strangeness a few times a year and I think it kind of resets my brain a little.

Will Lee actually died, and his friends had to (got to!) go through their grief about it, help fictional Big Bird go through his grief about it, show real children who had a relationship with Will’s fictional character how to go through it, and make a piece of art about death that holds up.

I'm enough of an urbanist to have to clear my throat like this before whining about traffic in Halifax this morning, but also: Thank goodness I've made it through all that and arrived at the only place on earth my laptop works.

Been told I should place “3 or 4” books on the various side tables in our house, artfully, so as to create a pleasing mood in persons who might wish to purchase my house. Constructing the perfect stack for each environment is now my entire personality.

Wife and I playing stump the band at reciting children’s books from memory. She’s ahead, but I just ran through Peepo perfectly and that feels like a moral victory.

Presumably the Germans have a word for the feeling you get when your baby discovers that they can reach objects on a surface that used to be too high.

My own biblical literacy is, if I may, quite strong and it's a huge source of joy for me in literature and in life. I got it from unhealthy religious communities in my late teens/early 20s which I do not recommend, and do not think you can replace with 3 weeks in grade 11 English. It's a pickle.

The greatest archetype of a Wile E Coyote sketch is where you can know exactly what is going to happen to him from the very first frame, but because the sketch is only 12 seconds long your brain hasn't quite caught up before he hits the canyon floor.

Of course people in Northern communities, especially in winter, struggle with vitamin D deficiency. It’s very important to me, therefore, that everyone knows about the Yukon’s public health campaign on that front. The “We all need the D” campaign. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Yukon's Department of Health and Social Services says its vitamin D campaign was meant to target a younger crowd but online reaction 'escalated to ribald humour.'

Blockbuster whatever. The good movie place in my hometown was an appliance shop whose proprietor just loved movies and kept a big rental section next to the dryers and stoves. Huge variety, historical selections, and never charged late fees because they didn't have a computer to track them. RIP.

When I moved back to Halifax from school in 2014 a group of kids from my building used to play cricket in the courtyard and it really made the place feel like a community. I’m delighted to see how much it’s grown since, and can’t wait to see a proper pitch in the city.

The optimism of spring: “Gosh, what am I going to do if I end up with 80 watermelons?” August’s mildewed vines and September’s stunted nubbins an eternity away.
Two seed trays of bare soil, with labels on either side noting what variety of watermelon is sowed within.

Taking my wife to be induced last year I had to drop her, park at the Lord Nelson, and walk over to catch up. Honestly the worst part isn't even finding parking it's navigating the parkade past all the pickup trucks it clearly wasn't designed for and then trying to pull a 3 point u-turn at the top.

Our neighbour had a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and you could throw a stone she had licked into the water and she’d run down and bring the same one back all afternoon. Unless you threw it in too deep, in which case she’d splash for a while and bring back another one, looking embarrassed.

On airports, the first time I flew internationally I was so nervous about missing a connection that I ended up with a thirteen hour layover at JFK en route to Dublin. They literally wouldn’t let me into my departure terminal when I landed and I had to go back to where I’d arrived.

Baby clothes are like avocados. You sit with a drawer full of stuff that’s way too big to put on, then you have one day where it all fits exactly and then they’re outgrowing everything and you do it all over again.

I do buy a lot of hardbacks, and, whether PB or HB, the fact that my favourite romance novels rarely get released well-made in print is one of the reasons I don’t own as many of them when compared to, say, the current mystery authors I read.

I hope this is true, and do think it would make a big difference. You could tell, when I was a kid, that there were some adults who thought it was good that I was bullied. Too precocious, too odd, too queer. They thought it was important that someone knock me around to fix it.

I am very much not a trad, and am almost always happy to defer to the liturgical choices people make in their particular communities. But I do think that if you’ve put together an Easter Vigil in which nobody says the word alleluia you maybe should take another crack at it.

1: if I need to type I’d rather do it on a keyboard (w/ numpad!), where I can also tab through fields. 2: if I’m going to have multiple tabs open to comparison shop I’d rather do it in a browser where I can one-click between them with a mouse. Even move to a new window to keep it all separate!
