Do you debate with friends and family about voting especially when the current government is far right? The long term solution is to abolish the state but this quick newsletter offers a short term solution for the voting crowd & those with legit doubts. petergelderloos.substack.com/p/to-those-w...

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

And that difference is important. That's not to say better or worse. But to have smart analysis, I think we can't reduce everything to good and bad. Ethically, the US is not better than Nazi Germany, but it approaches power and domination in a very different way. Fascism=structural Bad=ethical label

And I'm basing this on large part from conversations with anarchists who survived a fascist dictatorship and continue to struggle against a democratic regime that is committing many of the same forms of violence, but with a different methodology of repression. 7/8

The facts are on our side, though, when we point out that democratic US and Germany are guilty of genocide, are white supremacist states, etc. etc. 6/8

It also makes it harder for us to talk to people, because the governmental structure of Nazi Germany or fascist Italy is soooo obviously different from that of the US or Germany today and people know that. It's self-evident. 5/

Muddying the terms actually makes it easier for Democrats or other elements of the reformist left to erase their own complicity with colonialism, white supremacy, etc. and it makes it harder for us to debate the terms or identify the best modes of struggle. 4/

And conflating democracy with fascism gives a white wash to democracies, to "Western civilization" in general. Because democracies have always been a colonial, patriarchal, genocidal system integrally linked to capitalism, ecocide, slavery, and white supremacy. 3/

And without a doubt, the US is guilty of all the things you name. My priority is to have strategic clarity: how do we resist a democracy vs. how do we resist fascism. A one party totalitarian state is *extremely* different from a democracy, if you're a social rebel. 2/

Thanks for explaining this! It's rare these days to be able to disagree in comments sections without insults! I see what you're saying, and in my mind it boils down to, "we need to be able to say that the US is fascist because fascism is the most evil system." 1/1

and yet you haven't once been able to engage with the actual argument. You just misrepresent it and insult it. Your whole thread is full of lazy and sloppy thinking and dishonesty, and when I call it out, you get insulting. Brilliant.

Thanks for the notes! Could you explain the first one a bit more, particularly around what got included in the banner of fascism? I'm not sure I understand specifically who or what you're referring to (both in history and in what I wrote about antifascism).

I would be happy to respond if you bring up an honest critique of *one* single reason I bring up in the article about why it's important to remain independent of the Left, and admit that you either didn't read the article you're trashing, or acknowledge ... (1/2)

Most mainstream media in the US and Europe still claim that Hamas killed 1200 people that day, even though it's well documented (and acknowledged by the IDF) that Israeli forces carried out a huge part of those murders to avoid a hostage situation. Because it's *their official policy.*

I saw a video of this -Israeli pilots mowing down everyone running or driving away from the festival, released by Haaretz. Absolutely zero reference to it in any of the BBC's anniversary reports on Oct 7th attack. Pilot 1 "why are we firing at them?" Pilot 2 "I don't know just keep shooting"

I think, for starters, if he's head of state, assistant head of state, or head of the War Department, of a country the Vatican is not able to invade and destroy, excommunication is not in the papal playbook.

I definitely agree about the libraries, but the museums and universities were primarily to provide an alibi for / train the next generation to uphold their classist, white supremacist society. And the violence of the railroads warrants comparison to AI. Also, rich people built nothing. Workers did.

In one of the most important convos I’ve had this year, I talked with Sherry Turkle about how our interactions with AI platforms, simulated companions, and artificial personalities can reshape us, diminish our capacities, and alter our very conceptions of ourselves and what it means to be a person.

Artificial Intimacy Is Changing Who We Are
“We start to judge our human interactions by what the chatbot can deliver,” says author Sherry Turkle.
