This isn’t just ignorant, it’s dangerous and harms autists. No one is going to believe it, but it perpetrates the idea that something out there can “cure” autism. In doing so it shifts the discourse from acceptance and support to one where we need to be “saved” from our autism, that we’re damaged.

Born in 1891, Dr. Grunya Sukhareva described autism nearly 20 years before Kanner and Asperger. Overlooked due to sexism, antisemitism, and politics, her ahead-of-its-time work is now being rightfully reclaimed. She didn’t just predict autism research, she helped shape it.
"Image of Grunya Sukhareva (src Scientific & Practical Center for Mental Health of Children and Adolescents). Overlaid text reads - The forgotten pioneer of autism research,
Dr. Grunya Sukhareva. A Jewish woman in early 20th-century psychiatry. Emphasised neurodevelopmental origins and strengths. Her work was done in the Soviet Union, isolated from Western academic networks. She rejected the now debunked “refrigerator mother” theory in favour of a more compassionate, nuanced view.

No. Not an illness anymore than left-handedness or homosexuality are. It's a form of neurological and cognitive variation that affects how a person perceives, processes and interacts with the world.

A precious and much needed book by Chantelle Jessica Lewis and Jason Arday - "We'll see things they'll never see. Love, hope and neurodiversity." Prof. Arday died so recently, after a barrage of hate. Anyone who holds up a light against the evil in this world may wish to buy it.

Autism starts in the womb, long before a child is born. You cannot become autistic, any more than you can become left-handed (if you aren't). It's how your brain is wired and how your mother made you. Vaccines don't cause autism because they can't. Born autistic, die autistic.

Dr Arday was not a fraud. Quite the reverse, he was a widely respected researcher with around 40 academic publications to his name, many of which have been extensively cited. There is a growing number of reports from academics who worked with him who speak glowingly of him as an academic and person.

The truth is that no white academic has ever faced the level of vilification and scrutiny that Dr Arday faced, not even remotely. White academics are routinely penalised/punished for everything from plagiarism and falsification of data to sexual abuse - with nary a whimper. Many kept their jobs.

The truth is that Dr Arday's Doctoral thesis was reviewed for plagiarism and validated: “well within the accepted range of compliance with the academic standards of the time”. The truth is that he has a subtantial body of published work, none of which has been called out for plagiarism.

He didn't pass another academic's data off as his own. Read the report from Liverpool University's review of his PhD. Difficult for me to understand how people keep trotting out emotive bullshit like this, ignoring wider academic practices and context. Arday was cleared by Liverpool for a reason.

Peter Crosbie @petercrosbie.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Further re covering up, Arday's Doctoral Thesis was reviewed by the awarding Liverpool University, and validated. (I did read the link. It goes out of its way to look scary, and omits any attempt to situate what it purportedly finds in a broader academic context.)

Peter Crosbie @petercrosbie.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
There’s nothing being covered up. Some degree of what universities classify as “plagiarism” is so common in academic work that universities and journals publish guidelines setting thresholds below which it won’t trigger a formal review or penalty. The precise threshold varies, but 10–15% is common.

Of course you don't. Acceptable thresholds for plagiarism vary across institutions. Broadly: 0%–10%: Considered safe; usually includes citations and shared terminology. 10%–20%: Demands caution. This range may indicate poor paraphrasing or missing attributions. www.enago.com/articles/pla...

Plagiarism in Arday’swork is focused on one out of many papers. That work is his PhD thesis, which was reviewed by the awarding University and cleared. There are recent analysis out there, showing that the “plagiarism” occurs mainly in the Intro and References Chapters, not in the body of the work.

Peter Crosbie @petercrosbie.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
As an academic no doubt you’re aware that plagiarism in academic publications typically runs at around 1O - 20%, median is 12%. (Arday’s doctoral thesis has 4%.) Also that Dr Arday had around 40 academic publications, but only a single one where plagiarism is alleged, but validated on review.
