In the new Radio Times... Screening 9 September on BBC Four.

DRAMA
Penda’s Fen 10.15pm BBC Four Catch up via iPlayer
In his last summer before adulthood, the priggish
son of a village parson has his certainties on faith,
politics and sexuality disturbed by homoerotic
visions, as well as by supernatural apparitions that
include pagan king Penda and even Edward Elgar.
A pastoral chiller suffused with eerie imagery
and Elgar’s music, this BBC Play for Today from 1974
was filmed on the composer’s home turf near
the Malvern Hills. Written by David Rudkin
and directed by the great Alan Clarke,
Penda’s Fen soon became a cult classic
and has been hailed as a masterpiece.
It has warranted sporadic repeats,
cinema screenings, a Blu-ray release
by the BFI and, last year, a scene-byscene analysis from Ten Acre Books.
Spencer Banks, who played troubled
teen Stephen and was then best known
for the ITV kids’ drama Timeslip,
introduces tonight’s revisit at
10.00pm. PATRICK MULKERN

Sad to note the passing of hugely talented and underrated funk musician Bill Oddie.

No trailer talk because it only just came out BUT we do talk about the Interstellar Song Contest episode and Mr Ring-a-Ding, and we also take a deep dive into the new Season 7 Collection!

AoD7. Bringing an end to this short series of framegrabs from the Dr Who Season 7 Collection Blu-Ray set to be released on March 3rd. I hope people enjoy it. Colour Recovery/Undistortion by Richard Russell.

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 16/01/2025

AoD6. Very similar CR result to ep 5 so, again, no off-air colour used.

3585

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 15/01/2025

AoD5. The only episode for which the off air recording has relatively good colour throughout. However, the colour recovery result is also above average and with work gives better results

2776

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 14/01/2025

AoD4. Before Colour Recovery this would have been the hardest episode to return to restore as the off-air tape has no coherent or useful colour. We’re fortunate that CR is at the upper end of the spectrum.

1838

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

AoD3. Historically the most challenging episode as the off-air tape from WNED Buffalo has very little good colour and the colour recovery result was also comparatively poor. A lot of work has been needed to get closer to the quality we like.

49913

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 12/01/2025

AoD2. The only known off-air recording of this story is generally poor with many sections unusable and ep 2 typifies this. Colour Recovery, while struggling to decode shadow hues consistently, unsurprisingly proved to be better throughout.

4676

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 11/01/2025

Silurians 7. Not a bad off-air recording, but CR also pretty good so gives better colour registration. CR also requires a lot of work to correct hue errors- major and minor - throughput but the end results are worth it to get the episode closer to how it looked in 1970. 1/2

59910

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 10/01/2025

Silurians 6. A sort of inverse ep 5 in terms of the off-air which starts unusable but improves as it progresses although is never great. Colour Recovery giving better results overall with tighter registration.

2897

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 09/01/2025

Silurians 5. The off-air recording starts out poor but watchable, but by the end is unusable so Colour Recovery proved vital on this episode

3939

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 08/01/2025

Silurians 4. Reasonable colour recovery result so colours tend to have better registration, more detail and the inevitable CR minor hue fluctuations less troublesome than NTSC broadcast and domestic tape issues.

1735

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 07/01/2025

Silurians 3. Unfortunately another Colour Recovery failure, although the subcarrier did facilitate a double undistortion of the film recording. Fortunately the off-air recording which provides the colour, while soft and fuzzy, is not too bad

0817

Peter Crocker @petercrockersvs.bsky.social · 06/01/2025

Silurians ep 2. Colour recovery worked but with marked random red blotches across the screen which were challenging to manage. Nevertheless, no off-air colour was needed so colour registration is better.

Several people have asked to see more screengrabs from the new restorations on the Dr Who season 7 Bluray collection, so I’ll post some from an episode each day. Here is Silurians ep 1. Colour Recovery did not work so colour is smudgy from the NTSC Betamax off-air tape from 1977.
