Between stories like this and the reflexive “I stand with BRS” attitude, there’s a lot of really nasty underlying problems with how we think about military service and veterans in Australia at the moment. apple.news/Alk0Ge8JwT5G...

From the outside, the only clues something was up in the industrial estate office building in Brisbane's south were the expensive cars with personalised plates clogging the driveway.

Hmm, he is deathly afraid of people with nukes who could conceivably use them against the US (see his fawning over Putin, Kim Jong Un, etc), but I don’t think that fear extends to using nukes against someone who can’t reach the US with any.

I’m sure it’s no big deal that Hegseth doesn’t seem to think that either Confederate slavers or Nazis make it into his list of top three historic adversaries of the US.

We all know Hegseth was really a terminal O4, but between his ‘cult of the operator’, petty resentments, bigotry and casual viciousness, he really has the opinions and intellect of the worst terminal E4 you have ever met.

I suspect it’s all the members of that church’s congregation who served, with only the names marked “Obiit” being those killed. The Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers being marked in regimental colours is a particularly nice touch.

As a Lions supporter I’m prepared to admit Freo were the team to beat all season, and with four minutes to go I was sure Freo had done it. Great season-long effort by the Dockers.

Absolutely epic third AFL Grand Final victory in a row by the Brisbane Lions. With four minutes to go I thought Fremantle were going to win it, the last four minutes were incredible.

I’d watch a live stream of Hegseth in some South American prison after he’s extradited for various murders of ‘cartel members’ at sea. Might be a short show, though.

I finished Anna Funder’s “Wifedom” this week. I was very impressed by “Stasiland” and I found her account of George Orwell’s marriage to Eileen O'Shaughnessy equally compelling and (mostly) convincing. It seems Orwell had a complex private life (derogatory). #histbookchat, #photofriday #booksky.
A paperback book by Anna Funder titled “Wifedom: Mrs Orwell’s Invisible Life”

The book is the story of Eileen O'Shaughnessy’s marriage to George Orwell, based in part on O'Shaughnessy’s letters to a friend.

From a technical/tradecraft/PME point of view I’m interested in how all these operations are being put together. Is everyone who isn’t Iranian (including Israelis) flying off the one ATO? If so, it’s feasible that RAF tankers are only picking up Saudi aircraft fragged for DCA, I guess?

Probably the case for an older generation of strategic leaders, but not as much for the cohort I am specifically thinking of who would have been at school in ‘79 (if they were even born).

That’s actually pretty plausible, and explains (at least in part) the attitudes of some of the more upwardly mobile and ambitious ones.

That explains why the generation of US Army and USMC officers I am specifically thinking of hate the IRGC. I still don’t get why they hate the IRGC for the EFPs their platoon ate in Sadr City, but (ISI-bankrolled) IEDs that their company hit in Helmand a few years later don’t have the same effect.

Probably part of it, along with a sense of wanting to settle scores with Iran going back to the Embassy seizure and Beirut bombings, I guess. So I do understand the Iran thing, but not how Pakistan and the ISI get completely off the hook. Especially when you think about where OBL turned up.

Pete Monks @petemonks.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
9/11 commemorations again make me wonder why so much of US military leadership has implacable hatred for the IRGC and Quds Force, but Pakistan and ISI supporting the Taliban and sheltering OBL in Abbottabad (I mean, come on now) gets ignored or at best a shrug of the shoulders.

I was re-reading The Emperor by Ryszard Kapuscinski this week . I defy anyone to read this classic account of the court politics and detachment from reality of the twilight years of Haile Selassie’s regime in Ethiopia, and not think of current events. #histbookchat #photofriday #booksky

Just an idle thought, but the next time this happens the Home Secretary could always ask the MoD for a bit of help. There’s a battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles based about 15 minutes drive from Dover - who I expect would be fairly useful in Aid to the Civil Power tasks.

Sicario: Day of the Soldato is mostly fantasy SF operator trash, but… the scene of driving through the desert as the visibility closed in and the Mexican Police initiated the ambush took me RIGHT back to days in Afghanistan where I wondered “is this where our partners kick off the green on blue?”

The Hegseth “vet bro / ‘Department of War!’ / toxic masculinity” faction of MAGA is really banging the “Canadians are woke and soy and we can totally take them” drum, isn’t it? (Never mind that the CAF member pictured is actually hard as nails, though)

“The Pike: Gabriele D’Annunzio” by Lucy Hughes-Hallett is this weeks contribution for #histbookchat, #photofriday and #booksky. This is an excellent book - an equally informative and engaging account of a talented (but vile) figure in Italian history, who was more consequential than I had realised.
