Young night heron on Spring Creek, at the north edge of Jamaica Bay. These creeks are so large where they enter the bay, but now only a few blocks long. It must have been tremendous before everything was paved. A few of these guys, a great blue, a great egret and a snowy, a darting kingfisher.

That blue and this red Do Something to my brain.
Rene Magritte's The Banquet. A low stone wall suggesting a manor house porch in the foreground. A sunset sky of red and orange. In the middle distance, dusky green blue trees. A red sun that should be too low to be seen is instead burning a circle through the trees.

He grew up to be this guy
How to describe the poetry that was Orson and his awkwardly long arms? Never was there a cat so devoted to stretching his armpits. Here he is, all black cat ferocity, lying on a turquoise vinyl and chrome kitchen chair. His arms are hanging straight off the front. He is glaring, imperiously, as though he does not look absurd.

Inspired by @tkingfisher.com's long wall sticks, I decided to Just Start with one of the pieces of cedar I found in the trash. Now it has a woodpecker and a sun. To be continued.
Close up of part of a length of cedar plank. The thin kind, like you use to line a closet. There are knots and swirls. You might decide you see a bird with a crest and a long beak, in profile, beneath a sweltering sun. The same morsel of lumber, on the same beaten down wooden outdoor chair. There are woodcarving tools, and a curving line carved into the plank, where the back of the bird's head might be, if you thought there was a bird. The same plank. Now the bird and the sun are carved out. Irregular concentric rings. That section of the board has been rolled in blue ink, so the bird and the sun are rings of reddish cedar surrounded by the blue. The woods to either side is not inked.

The plank is lying on a large brown drawing board. Above it are two prints of the image, the reverse of the plank. A tool with a round surface is next to them.-- the barren, used to press the paper against the inked wood.

Smol Frog Sunday
A field of dappled browns and greys and blacks. It's a rotting log, but rotting so beautifully. In the center, a tiny, pale green frog. It is the same frog! Closer! It has a golden eye and faint lines crossing its back.

Then I went and made a bunch of cyanotypes at lunch:
Four blue, square images drying on a board. Some of the shadows are recognizably leaves. One looks like a sea plant, but it's just really old cabbage. On a yellow table in the sun, two slices of baguette, surrounded by crumbs, on a square of blue paper, on a round wooden cutting board. Around that, orange peels, some desiccated red cabbage. A silver envelope. The tip of a knife. There is a bowl of brown eggshell shards.

Feeling a bit seen/called out by this paragraph of @annleckie.com 's Radiant Star.
I greatly fear that if I spent the next paragraphs detailing the operation of Ooioiaa's water treatment and reclamation facility (or, more accurately, facilities-there were of course three separate systems, one for each precinct), you would find it tedious. And even if you, specifically, were to say to me, "But no! I am fascinated by water treatment systems and would in fact appreciate the information," I would strongly suspect that you were something of an outlier.

I will, therefore, not describe Ooioiaa's water treatment facilities in detail.

Went to the beach this evening. We should do this every night.
Small watercolor painting held over a beach blender, with paints and the edge of a book visible. The painting is of a white woman in a hat, sitting on the beach, watching the ocean.

I've been enjoying people's #ArtRepostJuly pictures so much! Today's theme is Large. This isn't huge by most standards, but at 12x16 it was by far the largest watercolor I'd ever made. It's the view from a place we used to visit in Maine. The mountains are #Acadia Nat Park.
Watercolor painting bending up slightly on a sunny deck floor. The image is distant blue mountains reflecting in calm water. In the foreground, yellow green seaweed floating on the surface of the water. In the middle ground, a peninsula of dark pines and its reflection.

Also these are brand-subsidized $150 chicken fingers.
The Popeyes tenders are actually an upgrade for Montauk's Surf Lodge. In years past, the restaurant would charge $150 for towers of reheated frozen products from Tyson's.
Popeyes is paying for the privilege of offering its chicken to an elite clientele in Montauk, where zoning laws have made fast food chains scarce. It's part of an expansive brand partnership program for the bar that on a recent night included Starbucks, Polymarket, Neutrogena, a makeup brand called Too Faced and Nylon, an "invite-only social club for young tastemakers," according to its website.

Somehow the word "slumming" appears nowhere in this article.
Tan white women in maybe their 20s in sunglasses and preppy-chic doing that "pretending to eat while laughing" thing made popular by "women laughing at salad," only they are posed around a 3-tier tower of chicken fingers and fries, decorated with little orange flags reading "Popeye's."

These women have never been to a Popeye's.The sun was about to set across Fort Pond in Montauk, and the revelers gathered at the nearby Surf Lodge were just starting to indulge themselves. The music thumped. Champagne flowed.
And, across the bar, sun-tanned hands reached into $150 towers of Popeyes chicken tenders.
"You can't take it with you," said Stephen Gay, a real estate agent who sells luxury properties in Florida, who had splurged on a $7,500 table that included the fast-food tenders and a flight of dipping sauces.

It. Was. Literally. Like. Eating. At. McDonald's. Extreme wealth is wasted on these people. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/11/n...
Last month, Jarhn Blutstein, the founder of East End Mixology, decided to try out a new cocktail on several private chefs when they gathered in her backyard to test out a new Uruguayan caviar. She chopped homemade chicken nuggets and soaked them in Beluga vodka, strained the concoction and put the chicken-infused vodka in the freezer. Later, she removed any fat that had floated to the top, added dry vermouth, a splash of barbecue sauce, shook and double strained it. She filled martini glasses with the drink, garnishing each one with a caviar-topped nugget on a skewer. She called it The McNuggetini. The group loved it, she said.
"It was literally like eating at McDonald's," Ms. Blutstein said.
"It was
so savory."

Basic process:
17 pieces of paper taped down on all 4 sides, with another line of tape bisecting each one horizontally. The tape is red, because I am fun.Same papers, with the area below the middle tape painted in various mottled versions of yellow+green+redNow the skies are blue+black+white in a manner I hope suggests a storm. You can't really tell, but the horizon line tape got taken up and put back down, so there won't be 1/2 inch white bands. The way my wife thought I had not realized I should do. But I did. The horizon tape is gone now, and the paintings have dark horizon shapes of various kinds.

I made 17 paintings today, adapting a technique I saw someone on IG doing with acrylic to watercolor. I'm pretty pleased! Kept me more loose than usual. Trying to decide which ones I like best.
17 very similar watercolor landscapes on various sizes of paper. Roughly: stormy sky over yellow/green/reddish land with a row of dark to suggest trees at the horizon. All laid out on the board they were taped to when they were painted.Same paintings, with numbers on them in case folks want to opine.

Rene Magritte "The Banquet." It's at the Art Institute of Chicago. There's something about that red sun that Does Something to my brain if I stare at it for a while. Like it's a physical sensation I can't explain.
An exterior half wall that looks like it is the edge of a terrace at some kind of manor house. There's an urn for flowers. Beyond that, a cluster of trees, more trees distant and enough of a line of grass to show you the trees are in a lawn. The sky is intense red and orange of sunset, and all the foreground objects have a misty blueish cast, as of sunset is becoming twilight.

In the middle of the painting, in the middle of the trees, there is a perfect circle of intense red-orange. It is right at the height that the light suggests the sun should be, but it is superimposed over the trees, not seen through them. It is uncanny and beautiful and I can't tear my eyes away.

Yes, because those immigrant waves were 100+ years ago. Are you making your argument in good faith? Because it puts you in company of publications that are absolutely just doing their usual thing of opposing Mamdani whether or not that makes sense.
A selection of publications complaining about this map, including the NY Post and the Washington Examiner.

A previous article from the NY Post showing Mamdani joyfully engaging in the mayoral tradition of making the opening of the city's outdoor pools by jumping in wearing a suit, presented as a complaint that he is violating dress code.

Loose watercolor of a bright red-orange and black bird on a branch, with sky blue background. The bird and branch have a thin black outline. The paint of the bird -- a mixture of reds in some areas and a very dark blue grey in other -- fans out into the sky background.
