Oh boy. This is… actually a very smart way to approach life in 2026

"Oh God," muttered Ford, slumped against a bulkhead. He started to count to ten. He was desperately worried that one day sentient life forms would forget how to do this. Only by counting could humans demonstrate their independence of computers.

nitewrighter

Me: I don't get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?
The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.
Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.
Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.

I’m gassing up, polishing the chrome, filling up the tyres of my bullshit, soon to be back on it
Sounds room. Background: Fender Princeton combo amp in handsome tweed, next to a Mesa Boogie Mark V combo amp in classic black, standing on a milk crate that is also on wheels for dumb personal reasons. One “o” on the badge has been sharpied over so it reads “bougie”, and there’s a sticker that says “war profiteers out of music” about the shitty streaming service that we all should hate.
Middle: one six string electric guitar with a metal neck giving off some rather unattractive glare in the overhead light. Brown-stained natural wood finish, black hardware, badass. Next to it is its larger sibling, with a Squier 12-string neck, a longer upper horn, and a tremolo tailpiece with the arm removed. Same hardware, pickups etc as the other.
Front: pedalboard loaded with a bunch of unnecessary but fun and noisy pedals, I’m sure I’ve posted a version of this board somewhere in the past, I’m not gonna type it all out again here. Everything is wired up and ready to rock and has in fact been rocking right up until I decided to stage, photograph and post this picture and then write an essay in the alt text because I’m not into the whole brevity thing.
It’s all on a scrappy but charming rug. Which may or may not tie the room together, depending on how annoying you find Big Lebowski bits. Not the Big Lebowski’s Bits, that’s a very different film, possibly made by Jackie Treehorn. Ah shucks, I’m rambling again…

It’s not exactly best-kept-secret territory and hardly a neighbourhood hidden gem but it does surprise me how many people are unaware that there’s a free, accessible landscaped roof deck on top of the Willis Tower lobby (Jackson entrance)
People sitting on grass and chairs with a big fucking building in the background. Bubble dome window to the lobby is visible to the left. Sunny and shit.Big fucking building with some blades of grass in the foreground for scale or contrast or whatever Jackson/Franklin intersection from four floors up

Skunk tuxedo cat, just barely out of kittenhood really, late teens ass cat, he’s got the physical build but none of the coordination or self-control of adulthood. Anyway he’s squatting on an unmade bed looking all cute and whatnot

I found the spot where that one building on the north side of the river east of Wabash is bearable to look at.
401 N Wabash, photographed from the river walk south and east of the building. It’s a frustratingly nice-looking building, blue reflecting the sky, and a conveniently-placed tree in the foreground obscures the name on the front of the building

Look if you’re at all sensitive to cute things you should sit down before clicking through, is all.
Brian Eno, who is a big kitten in black and white like a hybrid cow-skunk, sits in a brown paper bag. He’s looking up at the camera plaintively. Hazel-green eyes full of trust and innocence and murder.Same but he’s looking off to the side and seems a little bit manic, he looks like he’s just seen god or a moth.

This is also an explanation of what it’s like to be in a local band right now. Where there’s no money to be made, the only reason to do it is love. The work benefits from the care we put into it, even as the economics of it all mean we simply can’t do it as much as we’d like.
I do this because I want to, and for years now, "because I want to" has pretty much been the only reason to do this period. If you're doing it for any other reason, I won't go as far to question the nature of your commitment—but it's worth asking yourself whether you're searching for echoes of a past sensation instead of truly living in the reality of the moment.

A song is not a static thing and in a perfect world a song would be different every time you hear it; recorded music is a historical anomaly and we should celebrate these cash-grabs as hastening a return to a fully live musical tradition where there’s no concept of a “definitive” version of a song.

This is a very good read; subscribe if you can to @hearingthingsco.bsky.social for the whole thing www.hearingthings.co/stop-listeni...
The reason is that listening to music has become a trivial everyday affair as a result of technical progress. Listening to music is nothing out of the ordinary any more, you can hear music wherever you go, you are practically forced to hear music, in every department store, in every doctor’s surgery, on every street, indeed you cannot avoid music nowadays, you wish to escape from it but you cannot escape, this age is totally accompanied by background music, that is the catastrophe. [...] People have been stuffed full of music every day for so long that they have lost all feeling for music.
