If John Clifford sounds familiar, it's because Clifford was the screenwriter for Herk Harvey's classic Carnival of Souls! As improbable as that sounds, Clifford went on to write song lyrics throughout the 1960s, including a number of collaborations with Angelo Badalamenti.

Went to a convention today for the sole purpose of meeting LOST's Francois Chau. Warm, funny, and generous with his time, it was a pleasure to hear his memories of filming the Dharma orientation videos. He signed our Dharma van, "Namaste...and good luck."

Surely someone's noticed this before, but just connected the rock throwing scenes from Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. Jeffrey is bored and impulsive while Cooper is intuitive and intentional through his use of the Tibetan Method. In the following dissertation, I will...

Watched this fantastic film again. Bursting with quiet humanity, it's such a beautiful swan song for Harry Dean. David Lynch's monologue about his lost tortoise, President Roosevelt, is genuinely heartbreaking. Hard to believe we've lost them both.

Years ago, my artist friend Griff drew this Laura Palmer homecoming photo as a birthday present for me. First visit to the Palmer House, we showed the image to @maryreber.bsky.social, who asked for a print. This year we returned to find it displayed on a shelf in Laura's bedroom. Nice work, Griff!

Epilogue 2: George Romero is generally seen as the film's auteur, but NOTLD was actually a group effort by the members of the Latent Image production company, whose offices were located at 247 Fort Pitt Boulevard in Pittsburgh. The farmhouse cellar scenes were also shot here.

The final NOTLD location I visited in the Evans City area is the bridge that runs over the Connoquenessing Creek, which is located a short walk from the farmhouse property. It looks very different today.

The field on the same property is also featured in NOTLD, when the zombie follows Barbara to the farmhouse and when the sheriff's posse converges there near the end of the film.

At last, we make it to the farmhouse, where the bulk of NOTLD takes place. It's private property so I didn't venture any closer, but if you squint you can make out where the current farmhouse sits atop the same foundation from the original, which was demolished after filming wrapped.

A zombie pursues Barbara as she tries to escape and she crashes the car into a tree. Honestly, I think these may have been shot a little farther down the cemetery road, but I went with the vibe on this one, as the locations match pretty well.

The gravesite of Johnny and Barbara's father is a short walk from the cemetery chapel. The Blair headstone is easy to locate and the name on the father's headstone is "Cole," giving a possible surname to the ill-fated siblings.

One of my favorite films in recent years is ENYS MEN (2022). Mark Jenkin's follow-up, ROSE OF NEVADA, is slightly more straightforward, but still beautiful, enigmatic cinema that cannot be rushed. And the ending packs an emotional wallop. I'm definitely here for whatever Jenkins wants to do next.

Lynch and Frost both had films in theaters this week in 1992. We all know FIRE WALK WITH ME's story, but Mark Frost's STORYVILLE, an atmospheric Southern Gothic political thriller starring James Spader, deserves a wider audience (and a blu ray release) today. Plus, a cameo by Frost as Cyril Pons.
