A pinecone in the forest. Two thin, long, white Mycena mushrooms grow out of it. A tiny black wasp (?) sits on the cap of the right one.

Yes, sad. The old farmer enjoyed reminiscing about the old Sears catalogs; a special edition would come out at Christmas time and we all called it the Wish Book.

A collection of old coaster wagons at the pumpkin farm. The one I chose to carry my pumpkin and squash treasures was a rusty red Sears model, marketed heavily in Sears catalogs in the 1920’s. Every kid had one or wanted one. What will become of this farm when the old man can’t run it any more?

My family had one of those old Sears wagons, so this was nostalgic for me. In my childhood, we bought pretty much everything except food and cars from the Sears (and later Penney’s) catalog. Montgomery Ward still prints paper catalogs.

And I still have a red Radio Flyer wagon.

Good morning everyone! Another view of the preserve I visited yesterday with a Land Trust group. This spring-fed pond has been saved from the invasion of high-tension power lines that would feed voracious data centers. Thanks to all who worked so fearlessly to protect our priceless land.

I don’t say too much about where I live, Jon, for multiple reasons. You would be familiar with the situation here, though. It’s the fight with ATC and the transmission lines serving data centers.

It added some highlights to a shady spot, next to other darker varieties. 😊

I just spent the most marvelous afternoon/evening with a Land Trust group that has acquired this property. The group has defeated a huge energy corp. that planned to build high tension power lines (180 feet tall) across the property, which contains an esker and a federally endangered bee.

We hiked as a group to view this property, which also contains pristine springs that are the source of a creek, as well as other wetlands and prairie. It has been identified as a Natural Area of Regional Significance. It’s not far from where I live, and is open to the public.

The power lines will now have to go elsewhere.

What an inspirational group of people!
