Last days of Dutch Summer. 📷 by me.

A road less traveled.

A small path between a ditch and a wire fence, rows of trees lining the right while another row of smaller trees heads of to the left.

Dry leaves from the dry summer heat litter the ground, mushrooms emerging here and there from the forest floor.

The sun spills through the trees, illuminating the still green leaves of a young tree which is growing in the shadow of its kin.

Beneath mighty clouds a green carpet of grass, reeds, shrubs, and trees.

The water is devoid of the birds you usually see here, maybe already preparing to head south for the winter?

The inside of Hagar Qim, looking south the temple seems to have been constructed with this view on Filfla in mind. Of course, much of it has since gone missing like the roof and the temple we see was the result of multiple phases of construction.

So whether this was done on purpose, and for what purpose if so, I don't know.

I think the golden cape goes well with it. But while it was made around roughly the same time, it was found in Wales and the examples of golden hats we have are all from the continent.

The golden cape found in the burial mound named Bryn yr Ellyllon (Goblins' Hill). It almost certainly had more decorations attached to it, which didn't survive.

This was shown at the RMO's 'Vuur van Verandering' exhibition covering the Bronze Age right along with the golden hat of Schifferstadt.

Forgot the brand, but it was an x286 running MS DOS and it had both 5.25 and 3.5 floppy disk drives. It was a hand-me-down from my aunt and I spent quite a bit of time just exploring how to operate it. Also played some Prince of Persia which it could just about run.

I saw another golden hat in Leiden during the RMO's Bronze Age exhibition. This is the gold hat of Schifferstadt, estimated to be a few centuries older than the Berlin hat. It's also only 30 cm tall, and the decorations are a little simpler, but similar. 📷 by me

I do wonder if the height of the hat has any significance. Like, is it like builder taller and taller sky scrapers? Or is it to record more time/calendar/events?

This wasn't the first game I played, I had an NES. But once I did have a PC, this is the game I wanted to play and 4X has been my jam ever since. Sid Meier's Civilzation 1. And I immediately date myself.

It's evocative of the theme of the game, the advancement of history and how generations build upon the work of those that came before.

But it should also have had a spearman destroy an ironclad. No, I'm still not over that.

They actually took a minute to make one, complete with a photo (gen AI as well), and it got through the spam filter and into my inbox. Which meant that I was fooled for a moment, until I read the actual email. I did get curious and looked them up, see if they existed. And behold the first result.

The first result when you search for the book club.

"We don't solicit new authors and never contact authors directly to feature their books, Nor do we ever ask for any payment. This appears to be a highly prevalent scam throughout social media."

I've been getting a steady stream of spam ever since I published Unsaved. From those who love my book and want to market it, or turn it into a short movie, to those who think it would be great for their book club. But this one stood out because of the signature.

A screenshot of the actual email I got, you can see the signature which had me for a moment.

I think they actually grabbed someone's real photo rather than generate it, given how it looks like a random selfie.

I am actually of two minds. On one hand, Optimus is a good person who has not give in to despair even after millions of years of war. On the other hand, the long civil war will leave anyone with plenty of regrets.

The temple actually sort of reminds me of a fossil. The skin and flesh are gone, even some of the bones are missing. All you've got left are the clues of something greater. This temple wouldn't be on its own. It would be part of a landscape, a community. All we now have is this and our imagination.

The view of Ggantija from the other side. You can really see the scaffolding from here, as well as all the stones that have fallen over. It once had a roof, but little more than a hint of it is left now.

My science fiction novella Unsaved takes place billions of years in the future, at the end of time. Nothing we've created could survive that long, even species would be unrecognizable. Just look at this Neolithic temple on Gozo (Malta), only 5,000 years old and yet already so much is gone.
