Storming set from the Long Ryders, although Sid's voice was flu suffering. Plenty from this year's album, of which of course Four Winters Away is a terrific anthem, and now we are only two winters away - if we all survive.

@gidcoe.bsky.social You did sound very live last night, or maybe I am just easily fooled? Anyway van has behaved, and now enjoying a outskirts of Glasgow coffee.. Nice to have time to kill
Well good evening Mr Coe. You are sounding very live tonight.

Back after the evening swim (indoors) and prepping for trip to Glasgow tomorrow to see the Long Ryders. Expecting some righteous indignation about the state of the world and some fantastic tunes of course.

Fingers crossed the campervan behaves....

So here's the UK balance: Jackdaw replaces a bit of LNG in the summer (lowest demand). Porter doesn't say exact how much. Max 8 years. The coming extra 15 GW of renewable energy replaces 78 LNG tankers, every year, mainly in the winter (highest demand/price). www.energyvoice.com/markets/6048...
Porter rightly points to the summer as the period at which Jackdaw volumes would have the most impact. But Great Britain’s demand is the lowest in summer.

Gas demand is highly seasonal. In summer it can fall to around 100 mcm per day. In winter, it can be 300 mcm. The coldest day of 2026, in early January, demand reached 407 mcm. Jackdaw would be around 4 mcm per day.

“During winter the UK needs to draw on all the gas it can, so we pull some gas away from Europe and bring in LNG. In winter, when it’s most needed, is when [Jackdaw] would have the least impact,” Aurora Energy Research research lead Jacob Mandel said. “The UK will have to draw on LNG no matter what.”

Taking the opposite position to Porter is Carbon Brief. The climate change publishers have pointed to this year’s allocation round – which awarded around 15 GW of renewable energy – as displacing 78 LNG tankers per year by 2030.

Seasonal weather has a notable impact on renewable generation. Winter increases wind generation while cutting solar.

The country may be facing higher summer temperatures, but winter is still – for now – the major challenge to energy planning and prices.

Meanwhile, in the summer, the UK exports gas. This tends to be Norwegian pipeline gas but also LNG flows, for transhipment into Europe. As a result, even if Jackdaw production removes the need for domestic consumption of LNG, those cargoes may keep on flowing. As the UK faces higher gas prices, can Jackdaw have an impact?

According to Shell documentation from 2021, the field will produce around 1.4 bcm for only two years before going into decline. Assuming the mid case production scenario, Jackdaw will only be producing for eight years. The gas will come ashore at St Fergus and enter the transmission system.

During those years, would Jackdaw reduce the amount of gas the UK had to import? Does it reduce consumer bills?

Kathryn Porter of Watt-Logic has argued Jackdaw would be sufficient to displace LNG imports during summer months.

She qualifies that the addition of Jackdaw may “not be dramatic” on price “but they will exist by virtue of the way that gas is priced. To say otherwise is simply incorrect.”

DNV report in Energy Voice saying that hydrogen's only role is in heavy industries. Everything else will be electrified? Glad that is finally sorted. Although most have been saying this for years. Now stop thinking about putting hydrogen in your methane. www.energyvoice.com/renewables-e...
Technology costs
DNV bases its ETO on what it considers to be the most likely future. New technologies, such as fusion, could play a part in changing the trajectory of the world’s energy future. “We could be surprised on the positive side”, Alvik said. He pointed to storage costs as having fallen faster than once thought.

The 2026 ETO also reduced the long-term forecast for hydrogen and CCS by 29% and 15% respectively.

The future will have more gas than previously thought and less hydrogen, he explained. “Hydrogen fails to scale. It proves too expensive. It is inefficient.” The areas where there had been hope around the technology – heating, for instance – have failed to come through.

The decarbonised gas may still have a role in certain areas – steel, aviation, shipping – “but that’s about it”.

Essentially the same view today, business side of the house. The good doctor her in door's treatment room. Exceptionally well insulated with underfloor heating, and compared to the rest of the house, that is just "well insulated" / radiators. Getting the balance is difficult! Ends up too hot!!!

Convictions for breaching the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) in the UK are prosecuted under domestic legislation like the Merchant Shipping Acts and specific safety regulations.
Penalties and Enforcement
• Summary Conviction: Violations handled in magistrates' courts in England and Wales typically result in substantial fines up to the statutory maximum or level-based scales.
• Conviction on Indictment: Severe breaches—such as a master failing to render assistance to persons in distress at sea under SOLAS Chapter V regulations—can lead to imprisonment for a term up to two years, a fine, or both.

Obligations under the SOLAS Convention
The SOLAS regulations are clear. The master of any ship who is able to provide assistance should do so unless it is unreasonable or unnecessary to do so. So, assuming it’s deemed necessary that assistance is required, what should we class as unreasonable? Certainly one measure of unreasonable would be that, in the skipper’s opinion, to offer assistance would risk the safety of his crew or vessel
