In 1942, Albrier completed double the required training to become a welder for the WWII effort. When the Boilermakers Union refused her entry based on race, she threatened to sue and forced her way in, becoming the first Black woman hired as a welder at the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, Calif. /9

Frances Mary Albrier, 1942. The Richmond Shipyards expanded rapidly during WWII, hiring tens of thousands of workers to build Liberty ships. Welding was one of the highest-paying trades, and it was closed to African Americans. Albrier didn’t see a barrier — she saw a target. Knowing that the Boilermaker’s Union would look for any excuse to disqualify her, she completed twice the required training hours and passed the master welder’s test with flying colors. Nevertheless, the union rejected her application. Albrier threatened to sue, and the union buckled. Albrier excelled at the work and also used her position to feed information to the NAACP and labor organizers. Her defiance paved the way for a 1945 California Supreme Court decision that outlawed segregated labor auxiliaries and opened high-paying industrial trades to women and minorities.
