We welcome the Secretary of State's commitment to invest in tree-planting - but that investment cannot come at a cost to our peatlands. This investment needs to be in peat-free trees. #EndPeatSales Read more loom.ly/tuoCJOA

We need your help to ask your supermarket to help save peatlands, and remove peat from their supply chains 🌱 - peatfreepartnership.org.uk
Flat-lay photograph of assorted fresh vegetables and fruit, including carrots, celery, cauliflower, mushrooms, tomatoes, blueberries and leafy greens, scattered on a light background with traces of soil visible. A lime-green text box states that organic labels do not guarantee food is peat-free and encourages people to ask supermarkets to remove peat from food supply chains to help protect peatlands. A brown banner at the bottom reads: “Send an email via the link in our bio.” The graphic is a call to action advocating for peat-free food production.

Close-up photograph of fresh blueberries scattered across a bright yellow surface. A lime-green text box overlays the image with information about organic food and peat use. The text explains that peat is a natural organic material, that organic growers can still use peat to grow food plants, and that food labelled “organic” is not necessarily peat-free. The graphic highlights the need for greater awareness about peat use in food production.Close-up photograph of a peatland habitat featuring red sundew plants among mosses and wet vegetation. A lime-green text box overlays the image with text explaining that digging up peat to grow food, whether labelled organic or not, is harmful. The graphic states that peat extraction reduces peatlands' ability to store carbon, absorb floodwater and support biodiversity. The image highlights the environmental importance of protecting peatlands.

Don’t assume your organic veg is peat-free too 😱 Organic doesn't always mean environmentally friendly. While organic growers avoid synthetic chemicals, peat can still be used because it's a natural material, despite the harm caused by its extraction.
Close-up background of fresh vegetables including carrots, celery, mushrooms, lettuce, cauliflower and a tomato, with traces of soil visible. Overlaid text reads: “Did you know organic doesn’t mean peat-free?” and “We need clearer food labelling so we know how our food is grown.” The graphic highlights that organic food may not always be grown without peat and calls for greater transparency in food production.

Expansive peat bog landscape with pools of water scattered across grassland under a cloudy sky. Overlaid text asks, “How Old Are Peatlands in the UK?” and explains that peatlands grow very slowly, accumulating around 1mm of peat each year. The text states that many UK peat bogs have been forming for up to 10,000 years and can reach depths of up to 10 metres.Close-up view of peatland plants growing in shallow water, with green leaves reflected on the water’s surface. Overlaid text explains that some of the UK’s most distinctive plant communities are found in peatlands, where plants have adapted to low-nutrient, waterlogged conditions. The text highlights insect-eating sundews and butterworts, and notes that sphagnum mosses can hold up to 20 times their weight in water.

Open peatland landscape beneath a dramatic cloudy sky. Overlaid text explains that healthy peatlands can store billions of tonnes of carbon for thousands of years, including 3.2 billion tonnes in the UK, but drained or exploited peatlands release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. A white double-arrow icon appears in the bottom-right corner, indicating the next slide.Peat bog landscape with shallow water, low vegetation and a wide sky filled with large clouds. Overlaid text explains that peat and water work together to create unique habitats for rare wild plants. It also states that peat bogs act like a sponge, absorbing rainwater to reduce flood risk, and that water filtered through healthy bogs is cleaner and cheaper to treat than water from degraded peatlands.

A fen carr wetland with shallow standing water winding through grasses, sedges and patches of vegetation beneath a sparse woodland of leafless trees. The flooded peatland habitat extends into the background, with vegetation growing around the water's edge. White text reads “Fen Carr,” followed by: “Fen carrs are naturally wooded peatlands fed by nutrient-rich groundwater and surface water. Often found alongside fens and drier woodland, they are home to trees such as willow, alder and birch. These wet habitats can be dense and tangled, with shrubs, ferns, sedges and mosses growing among pools of standing water.”

An area of bog woodland with scattered pine trees growing across pale grasses, mosses and low vegetation on peatland. Taller trees stand against a cloudy sky, while the open landscape stretches into the distance. White text reads “Bog Woodland,” followed by: “Bog woodland is an open woodland with scattered trees. This rare habitat develops on peatland that is acidic and low in nutrients, which is why the trees grow slowly and often remain small. Scots pine and downy birch are the most common species, and some of Scotland’s oldest bog woodland trees are estimated to be around 350 years old.”A fen landscape with calm water bordered by tall reeds and grasses reflects a blue sky filled with large white clouds. Trees and shrubs line the far bank, creating a rich wetland scene. White text reads “Fen,” followed by: “Fens are peatlands fed by both rainfall and groundwater, creating conditions that support a remarkable variety of plants and wildlife. They are among the UK’s most biodiverse habitats, home to around a third of native plant species, half of all dragonfly species, and thousands of insects. Over time, some lowland fens can naturally develop into wet woodlands or raised bogs if left undisturbed.”

A blanket bog landscape stretches across a wide, gently sloping moor, with pools of still water reflecting the sky and surrounding vegetation. A large mountain rises in the background above a layer of low mist. White text reads “Blanket Bogs,” followed by: “Blanket bogs are peatlands that spread across wide, gently sloping landscapes like a blanket. They’re home to mosses, sedges and small shrubs, with pools of water creating a unique patchwork of habitats.”A raised bog covered in mosses stretches across a gently rolling landscape under a pale sky. The foreground is dense with bright green and golden sphagnum moss, while hills and rocky outcrops can be seen in the distance. White text reads “Raised Bogs,” followed by: “Raised bogs are areas of peat that often form a dome shape, rising above the surrounding landscape. They are fed entirely by rain and other forms of moisture from the atmosphere, creating wet, acidic conditions where only specially adapted plants can thrive.”
