I wonder if we have confused greatness (eminence, prestige, reputation) with grateness (shredding ourselves into tiny pieces). The latter would seem to be a more apt description.

Ever wonder what an entire season of scripts would look like printed out? Here is PJOTV season two.* *author and a large mountain in the background provided for scale. And no, you can't read the scripts.

Hold holds a large three-ring binder about six inches thick, full of printed scripts. He holds it strategically so you can't read anything because Rick is a meanie.

NYT crossword puzzle, 31 across, "Only 10% of Americans have one." Five letters. I resist the urge. I tell myself, "The answer isn't 'brain.' The answer can't be 'brain.'"

What I'm reading: Usually three books at a time. Right now, Sabbia Nera (a mystery in Italian), Sinatra: The Chairman (biography), The Beautiful Mystery (Inspector Gamache mystery #8). Just finished When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb (a queer immigrant folktale, very good!)

The shelf was not intended to be a cat perch. Tribble says it is now a cat perch.

I love this Italian expression: "conoscere vita, morte e miracoli." It implies that you know everything about someone, literally to know their "life, death and miracles." It would be nice to think that between life and death, we can all be known for a few miracles we made or experienced!

Just finished the eighth Inspector Gamache mystery. This one was claustrophobic, set in a remote monastery, but Penny is so good at making me care about the characters, especially with series-long arcs about the main characters' personal dramas. This one was particularly heartbreaking!

Another discovery while reading: the Italian term salamelecchi, from the Arabic greeting "Salam alaikum," peace be upon you. In Italian, senza troppi salamelecchi means without much ceremony, and fare salamelecchi means to make obeisance to someone, to bow and scrape.

Reading this fascinating history of early versions of Christianity. Interesting detail I did not know: the word allegory comes from Greek allos (other) + agorein (to speak), so it's literally "other-speak."

More snow yesterday. I shoveled a path for the dog so she could get into the backyard. Today, that path is an ice rink. The dog is not amused.

This week's deep-cut deity: Ananke, primal goddess of inevitability. In some myths, she was the mate of Khronos (time). Together, they entwined around the egg of creation and crushed it, splitting all matter into heaven, earth and sea. It was, you know, inevitable. www.theoi.com/Protogenos/A...

Winged goddess with a staff. Labeled Ananke.

Today in history, Feb. 27, 1933: the Reichstag fire allowed Adolph Hitler to quickly dismantle democratic institutions in Germany. By blaming the communists and creating anti-left hysteria, he gained emergency powers, suspending most civil liberties including habeas corpus and freedom of the press.

Good first meeting with the PJO writers' room! It's the same team as season two, which is great because they did a fantastic job. Only issue: Becky and I joined via Zoom, and they were having donuts. Now I want donuts. (Yes, I am basically Blackjack.)

Trying to avoid the news but every day headlines are like: Morning: Man decides to blow up the moon today. Evening: Man decides not to blow up the moon today and expects us all to be grateful he averted a crisis.

Deity of the week: Priapus, god of vegetable gardens, son of Dionysus and Aphrodite. Popular in art, but I have yet to figure out a kid-friendly way to introduce him into Percy's world, since his defining feature is his enormous, er . . . let's just say I'm only sharing the top half of this picture.

Yesterday, we had our first PURELY HYPOTHETICAL absolutely-nothing-confirmed "what if" conversation about what the casting might look like for Nico di Angelo if/when we get to move forward on season 3, and although it was just a thought exercise, I'm not going to lie, I still got chills. 🤞☠️

At sixty, I now realize why old people say, "I never thought I'd live to see the day..." Because I've been saying that a lot recently. *shakes fist at the sky and grumbles in curmudgeon.*

Today's deep-cut deity: Cybele, the Phrygian Mother Goddess (equivalent to Rhea). She was originally born a hermaphrodite named Agdistis, but the gods feared such a male/female being would be too powerful, so they "cut off the male organ." Stories of gender change & fluidity are as old as humanity.

First year I was a full-time writer, I worked nonstop on 2 manuscripts for months. One day, Becky and I realized that with the kids in school, we could actually take a break and go out to lunch mid-workday. Luxurious! Halfway through, another diner recognized me and yelled, "Go back to writing!"

Favorite new Italian expression. In English, we say, "He keeps turning up like a bad penny" for that annoying person we don't want to see anymore. In Italian, the equivalent is: "È come prezzemolo." He's like parsley. Here's to reducing the parsley people in our lives!
