It's a function of their roster building. Putting Nylander (or Marchenko/McKenna/Cowan) on a 3rd line to mimic the Canes or Penguins Cups is just asking them to fail while also weakening the Tavares line. As built this team is a top 6/bottom 6 team and will go as far as the top 6 take them

I think the McKenna time line is fake tbh. They have no D or C anywhere close to that window and planning for a time line where your only talent is on the wing sounds like a disaster. If the 34 timeline blows up McKenna is either your Kadri type or selling him kicks off your 8 years of rebuilding

Yeah that's what I'm getting at kinda. No good C's hit the market. The free agent market is overpaying Coyle types and praying. Nobody trades a good C. The Leafs don't have assets to trade anyways. So that leaves throwing draft pick darts and hoping in 4-5 years one of them has hit

I've tried to keep my expectations of Cowan as a middle sixer but he does help on the left side. My medium/long term concern remains down the middle but no one's really moving 25 year old centres with top line potential

The appeal of trading Knies is that he's an archetype of player that is historically the most overvalued, his last season was a mixed bag, so this is the last chance to move him near the peak of his value. It'll be an open question if they've maximized that value in the return so we'll see
