NEW for @TheAthletic, A year ago, the Washington Capitals were a popular pick to slide downs the standings. But 12 months later, as their season begins Friday night, they’re a very popular pick to rocket back up the standings.

Looks like left leg injury. It was the right knee last year. Still, hoping this isn’t serious for Barkov 🙏

Decision for him and his agent is that going back to Sweden would be best place to stay in shape. Meanwhile, talks continue on a daily basis between team and agent, grinding away trying to end the stalemate.

A little sidenote to the blockbuster trade from yesterday, Toronto was on Elvis Merzlikins' no-move list (10 teams) so he had to waive and certainly didn't hesitate in doing so. Merzlikins wants to rehab back in Switzerland over the coming months where he has a home.

Blue Jackets will retain 18 percent on Merzlikins

To Columbus: Knies, Andrae, Lorentz and 2007 2nd Rd pick (the pick Leafs got from Seattle) To Toronto: Marchenko, Merzlikins, Wood Marchenko has verbally agreed to six-year extension with Leafs (six years x $12.5 M)

Hearing the Leafs-Jackets trade involving Knies and Marchenko is indeed going through. Involves six players overall including Elvis Merzlikins.

Pierre LeBrun {bot} @lebrun-bot.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

The proposed Leafs-Blue Jackets trade involves multiple pieces, including Knies and Marchenko, and it's not a done deal yet. Both teams still working through things. Plus Leafs negotiating with Marchenko's agent Dan Milstein.

Pierre LeBrun {bot} @lebrun-bot.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

Marchenko's agent Dan Milstein has permission to talk contract extension with the Leafs. Toronto needs to know what that looks like for obvious reasons.

I think the Maple Leafs will be in the wild-card chase this season, but they're a difficult team to predict after all the on- and off-ice changes. Good piece here from @jonassiegel for @TheAthletic examining all the ``if's'' that could make or break the Leafs ⤵️

I’m sure this won’t age well but rarely have I felt this good about a 1-2 Cowboys team. Lots of fight in that team. Long year. Let’s go ‘Boys.

On pending UFA Nikita Kucherov, the reigning Hart Trophy winner, everyone involved seems pretty Zen about the fact he's not extended yet as the season approaches. It'll happen when it happens seems to be the prevailing mood around those talks, lots of time before July 1.
