Shouting out Dan Owen, my OSM'18 roommate, Coral Reef scientist, and NOAA Natural Resource Specialist on his Band's first feature on the radio! Dead Reef is St. Pete, FL based psychedelic sludge metal band, and their first album will be available soon.

1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria. 2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae. 3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish. The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

Every time I see any media of humans pumpfoil boarding (foil pumping) I just wonder crazy things exist we can leverage from zooplankton-adaptations to water physics. Sure, we have *some* cool stuff now. But like, zoops spent millennia+ adapting to navigating stronger currents to achieve end-goals.

Proud to be a data-point for future germ-cell tumor patients. I was, like, literally decaying and it wasn't just good vibes that saved me. Bodies are unique and I'm thrilled during my 10th year of remission to report my data.

I wish I could convince my mind that "writing can be fun" in the same way I managed to for "speaking can be fun". There's something humanizing about watching others struggle in speaking that doesn't exist in watching others struggle with writing.

Applications are the bane of my existence. I would rather give a dozen chalk-talks than write 2 pages about myself and my accomplishments.

Still thinking about this one a day later. How do they snag these..... I've seen humans struggle to pipette the small siphonophores.

I feel like a remora as a recent PhD right now. Circling the known funding sources for PIs with anything tangential to latch onto. It's not parasitic, I can support myself off the scraps and cast off data. Just give me a habitat in this oligotrophic biological funding environment.

Engagement is there in an angry population, look at data center issues in small towns.... first glimmer of hope I've personally had for a unification of the modern proletariat.

Patrick Duffy @pduffyplankton.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I agree with low-info populace which is why I think that "engagement" needs to be more about fewer high quality interactions than mass marketing campaigns. Fascists own media companies, fighting marketing volume vs volume is futile. A text message will not make someone more engaged or change minds.

Patrick Duffy @pduffyplankton.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
I don't disagree. I still think text/email message campaigning is a waste of money and possibly negative overall. The people that need to be convinced to register to vote (or to vote) aren't going to be swayed by that method.

Counter-point, as a younger person if I get a spam call/text from a candidate I immediately think they're backed by bigger money and like them a bit less. It's also possible you're just not the target demographic because you're already designated as a sure vote. (As a young person spammed by texts).

I wondered if pelagic tunicates sleep, because they're like urochordates and all... and now I find myself reading Endocrinology manuscripts. Apparently, melatonin has been found in a bunch of invertebrate phyla too. Kind of cool stuff I barely understand on the evolution of bioregulation pathways.

My parents managed to raise two PhDs with very different personalities. I realized that this photo is significant to my Duffy family history, so I feel the obligation to post it somewhere. My brother teaches statistical methods in environmental sociology. Apples, trees, and all that.

Saw a moth on my backdoor and managed a good photo of an invert (for once). It seems to be a slug-moth, possibly the abbreviated button slug moth. Not formed from slugs, their larvae aren't traditional caterpillars and resemble 'slugs' (or chitons, to me).

Like, I'm fairly confident this specific individual is a fritillariid because of the 'hammer-head(trunk)' and and the parallel trunk-tail alignment? Just trying to nail down presence/absence is still huge.

First publication! For this manuscript, I manually reviewed ~550k plankton pics across 11 months to ID life stages of salps and doliolids. Tl;dr 'only using bloom-observations to predict distributions of pelagic tunicates is likely missing their full ranges'. And also doliolids =/= salps

Oh, crap, now I have to actually do something with the PhD. For the summer, I've got another crazy manually ID'd image-data I can get submitted (that was only in my dissertation as traits in a few months). I maybe manually identified larvaceans from ~550k ROI while also doing salps & doliolids.
