I have fond memories of reading about the activities of the Friars Minor during my study of early modern Irish history as an undergraduate at @ucddublin.bsky.social. A Patrick Duffy OFM served as bishop of Clogher in the seventeenth century. A former provincial of the Friars Minor recently told me

I marked the occasion by visiting the three Franciscan friaries in Dublin over the last few days - the Capuchins on Church Street, the Friars Minor on Merchant's Quay and the Conventuals in Fairview

Today marks 800 years since the death of Saint Francis. I'm no theologian, but Francis's love of the poor, simplicity and care for the environment is one of the most authentic (albeit sometimes most difficult) form of Christianity

Orange marches were illegal under the Party Processions Act. On 10 June 1835, the Grand Lodge committee instructed Orangemen not to march in procession with banners and colours that July. I must find out if a march took place in Portadown in the end and whether the district master was disciplined!

How ironic that on today of all days, I was in the Museum of Orange Heritage, reading committee minutes of the Grand Lodge of Ireland on 8 July 1835. They considered expelling the district master of Portadown if he persisted in his plans for a procession on 13 July! www.rte.ie/news/ulster/...

The cathedral has some brilliant portraits of former Anglican bishops of Clogher. Lord Robert Ponsonby Tottenham was bishop during my period of historical research, although I have never studied his own career in detail.

Mass was celebrated at this bush in the grounds of the fourth chapel during penal times. This was recounted by the famous novelist, William Carleton in his 'The Midnight Mass'. Carleton lived in a nearby cottage.

The first archbishop of New York, John Hughes, was baptised on the site of the fourth chapel and returned to preach there in 1846. Hughes is best known for building Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York. A stained-glass window from the famous Harry Clarke studio in Dublin commemorates him.

Here's me sitting in the Tullycorbet stall at Clogher Cathedral. Traditionally, canons of a cathedral chapter received a preband from a particular parish in the diocese. The parish provided an income for that canon. I grew up around the corner from the now derelict Anglican church in Tullycorbet.

Patrick Duffy @pduffy1.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The current cathedral was built in 1744 on a medieval site where the first bishop of Clogher, Saint Macartan, founded his church in the fifth century. Known as the 'fourth chapel', the Catholic church dates from the 1840s but Mass was celebrated on the site in penal times

I had a great day in Clogher, Co. Tyrone yesterday, when I visited St Macartan's Anglican Cathedral and St Macartan's Roman Catholic Church, two magnificent churches with fascinating but very different histories.
