The first question we ask social sector organisations that come to us to help with economic evaluations is...
Start with why.
We help social sector organisations with economic evaluations. Before we start, we ask a few questions to understand the purpose of the evaluation.

"Research shows that loneliness is increasing among young people," according to our friends at the Marmalade Trust
“For the 10th anniversary [of Loneliness Awareness Week] we are calling on a renewed national leadership on loneliness and social connection through a cross government action plan that future proofs the social health of young people and recognises the importance of a coordinated, multi-systemic approach to address loneliness in all ages.”

If improving children's wellbeing means thinking about the whole child, we have to use a measurement framework that goes beyond school attendance, attainment and children in crisis.

It's Volunteers Week and we're celebrating our 1,000th volunteer, Iseoluwa Adejumo 🎉
Tell us a bit about why you chose to volunteer with PBE?

What drew me to PBE was that it felt like an opportunity to share my skills and actively be involved in making positive changes happen.

How did you find the experience and what did you learn?

I enjoyed getting to learn about Welcome to Badminton’s work with migrants and, as a foreigner living and working in the UK at the time, I felt personally drawn to the project. Volunteering on this project definitely gave me a sense of fulfilment and elation at being able to give a solution to a pressing issue. It was also an eye-opener to the fact that volunteering does not always have to be a grand gesture but with a few hours a week, from the comfort of your home you can make a difference.

What would you say to other economists thinking of engaging with PBE?

Overall, I had a great experience throughout the project with adequate support from the PBE team ranging from setting up introductory calls, regular check-ins and spelling out clear expectations. My biggest thanks to Nadine and Ruth for this amazing opportunity. I definitely would take up another volunteering project with PBE!

Iseoluwa supported Welcome to Badminton, a charity that offers sports sessions for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to help support wellbeing.

When measuring impact, we often come across the J-curve phenomenon. When people get involved with programmes designed to help, we sometimes see a fall in their reported outcomes before it begins to rise — this appears as a "J-curve" when we chart the impact of the programme.

What is green or blue social prescribing? 🌊 🌳 The evidence of a link between improved wellbeing and spending time in nature is growing.
What is green or blue social prescribing? Green or blue social prescribing encourages people with mental health difficulties or low wellbeing to get involved with nature-based interventions. The NHS refers to 'green' social prescribing to cover all aspects of nature, but increasingly, specific 'blue' water-based interventions are being developed.

We estimated that ending chronic loneliness could reduce the need for almost a million GP appointments per year. Loneliness is one of the key drivers of low wellbeing and a priority issue for us.
In 2024, our research found that five million adults in the UK struggle with chronic loneliness. It is one of the biggest drivers of low wellbeing. Loneliness in the UK disproportionately affects people under the age of 30. Other groups more significantly affected are women, people who are separated from their partners and those who report poor health. Ending chronic loneliness in the UK could reduce the need for almost a million GP appointments per year. It could also lead to a reduction of 100,000 impatient episodes in hospitals.
