What if every Wikipedia edit spawned an asteroid? At this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas, US, visitors to the Wikihaus got to find out thanks to a playful, community-built project that turns real-time edits into an old-school arcade game. 🧵⬇️ (1/5)

WikiAsteroids Image shows a video console with a screen, joystick, and six yellow, red, and blue buttons along with game graphics reading "Mean Girls", "Private Inventory", and "Ken (unit)" on the left. Main text says: Ever been crushed by a Wikipedia article that is hurtling through space? Now you can be, thanks to WikiAsteroids, a chaotic retro game where real-time activity on Wikipedia becomes asteroids and powerups.

Introducing WikiAsteroids, a classic arcade asteroids game powered by real-time #Wikipedia edits! ☄️ asteroids.wiki Each edit on Wikipedia spawns an asteroid. The larger the edit, the larger the asteroid. A newly created article spawns an extra life, while a newly registered user spawns a powerup.

A screenshot from 'WikiAsteroids,' a browser-based game inspired by the classic Asteroids arcade game. The title 'WikiAsteroids' is displayed at the top in bold, futuristic font. The game screen has a black background with a green triangular spaceship. Floating around are asteroids with article titles such as 'Cyclura rileyi,' 'Mean Girls,' 'Private inventory,' and 'Ken (unit),' along with a powerup labeled 'User:WikiEditor.'

A perennial UX quirk on #Wikipedia: a new contributor was working on a draft, but didn't click the "Publish page" button because of their (reasonable) assumption that it would publish the page as a live article. They assumed their work is auto-saved like many document editors do and lost their work.

Visited the @internetarchive HQ for the first time for their annual party. What a blast.

The interior view of the Internet Archive headquarters auditorium inside a former church, with ornate ceiling details and a large stained-glass dome. The room is softly lit, with rows of attendees seated in wooden pews facing a stage. The stage is set up with a large projected screen displaying the title "Escaping the Memory Hole".

Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive, standing on stage delivering a presentation. A large screen behind him displays a slide titled 'Preserving Links & Context,' with a section on 'Turning Web Citations Blue' showing a Wikipedia article and citations with dead links that the Wayback Machine has been able to fix.

The main entrance of the Internet Archive headquarters, a neoclassical building illuminated at night. The facade features tall, white columns and ornate architectural details. Blue lighting highlights parts of the building. A crowd of people is gathered in front of the entrance for a block party, some taking photos and others chatting.
